7500 Mile 2012 GT 500

I always drive with the windows down, or with the stereo up. I had never actually driven the car with windows up and stereo off. On the drive into work this morning I had to jump on a conference call, turned the stereo off, rolled the windows up, AC off.

As I accelerate from 0 - 70 the noise in the rear end gets louder and louder. I would call it a Hum, kind of like a stuck brake pad, or a dry rear end. My brother was in the car, he thinks everything is normal and gives me the "EH, that wont hurt it, its normal"
Maybe it is normal, this is my first Mustang. I can tell you I have owned new Chevy Trucks, 4 Tacoma Trucks (All new), My wife has had two new KIA Sorento's, and a New Turbo Charged Optima, and never have I been able to hear the rear end in any way at all.

If I let off the gas and decelerate the noise gets quieter the slower the car goes. I would say that on acceleration the noise starts picking up around 15mph and gets louder the faster I drive.

I really dont want to waste hours and hours at Ford and have to beg and fight with someone to go for a test ride with me to only be told "Its normal"
I figure you guys are the experts, and you know what may be happening.

Normal or needs to go to Ford?

I bough the car used, its stock as far as I know. If it has an upgraded suspension I wouldnt even know how to check.

Any help would be appreciated. The thought of my car having issues worries me. I am used to driving vehicles that sound perfect and never break down.

Take a picture of your lower control arms and post it here.

Do these Pics help?
What do you see? Thanks for offering to help, really worried about my car. I love it, like an old girlfriend. Buying a preowned Shelby is like getting a new super hot girlfriend, but you have no idea where she has been in the past, who she was with and what he did to her, she wont tell you where she has been, and you have to ask your buddies if they can help you figure it out.

My first guess would be to check the fluid level in the rear end and add friction reducer even if full. It's cheap and easy. My '08 used to spew gear oil all over the axle after hard acceleration. I got Ford to replace the bleeder valve with a little collection bulb (like a mini turkey baster bulb) - no more oil on axle. I am not sure the 12's have the same bleeder valve as mine.

You have stock lower control arms, which would mean your upper control arm is stock too. (First thing to go is the lower control arms.) Upgraded suspension pieces can transfer noise into the cabin. So, with stock stuff, go with bfox's advice. May just be normal gear noise too.

Thanks.

Does the stock gearbox make noise as you drive if its super quite in the cab of the car? Should I be able to hear it as I drive? I mean its not super loud, I can just hear it is all, and I am not used to hearing it.

Example - (Sorry to keep referring to Toyota, its all I really have for reference) - If I heard this sound in a New Tacoma I wouldnt even post it on a forum, I would take it to Toyota immediately because its not supposed to make noise in a new car. I assume its different with a performance car.

Friction Reducer - What Brand? Where to buy locally? I dont want to buy the wrong thing. How much do I install in it? Where exactly does it go?

I am not a mechanic, dont pretend to be. But if I dont ask these questions I will buy the wrong thing and I will pour it into the wrong place. Its better for me to get exact specifics.

I am no mechanic either - probably less of one than 90% of the forum members on here. I just don't believe the rear end should make noise. Mine doesn't - at least not anything noticeable to my ear. Your description sounded more like gear noise than NVH transmission to me. My suggestion was based on the fact that it is an easy check (the gear fluid) and the friction reducer is something I've seen reference in this forum many times. I don't remember any specific brand. You can check your gear oil by removing the top/fill plug and 'feeling' for the oil. It should be pretty much right there. It might not even be a bad idea to have it changed. I've purchase my own Mobil 1 (75-140, I think - but check your manual) and had it changed at the oil change place. At very little cost, it saves the trouble (filling the diff is the PITA). In fact, I didn't have them add the friction reducer because I forgot to bring it!

+1 on Joe's advice. Just to follow up, I checked what I had purchased and then forgot to add (lol). It's the Amsol Slip Lock.

The ring and pinion inside the rear differential was not set up properly. That's why you have noise. It should be quiet. No oil change or additive is going to help here. You will need a new ring and pinion. It will need to be installed by a driveline expert, otherwise it will make more noise than you are now experiencing.
Another option is to buy a complete rear diff from Ford Racing. About$1300.00
The noise you have now will continue to get louder with time and miles, but will not hurt anything if you decide to just live with it.

This is what I meant. KD is spot on as usual. The modifier you want is the ford spec but your problem is a bad mating between ring and pinion. Loud but not harmful. My first new 3.73 install was a schoolbus at highway speed. Took it to another shop and that guy showed me where it was off and it wasn't by much. The new install was quiet. It's an art that requires patience and best not done at a dealer where it's a rush job.
If I remember, you bought used. The previous owner probably hammered it goodbye a few times which can make any nicely installed gearset loud.

I had the front right wheel bearing go bad on my 02 GT. It was a noticeable hum and was quite loud.

I can't tell what is causing it. Noises worry me, especially since it was used. I called Ford and asked "Can you tell me if this GT 500 I bought has ever had warranty work performed" The guy at Ford was a complete jerk, rude as he could be. Said Ford isn't allowed to release previous service records on the car I now own.

Also, when leaving the parking garage each day, driving slow, I always hear a tick, tick, tick. Really fast ticking from under the car. Sounds like it's right in the middle.

Today I turned the car off while in the garage and let it coast for 200 feet. Tick, Tick, Tick as it rolled with the engine off.

What in the world could that be?

Man I dread going to Ford and asking them to listen to my car for issues. It's always a hassle.

I wish someone would look my car up at Ford and tell me if it has ever been in for repair/complaints.

If you were closer, I'd hop in your car and have a listen, but I'm NW of Fort Worth and Dallas is a haul.

If you ever ppan to come this way I will pay you brother.
I work in Addison. I live in Princeton (8 miles east of Mckinney) Would love for someone to tell me what is happening with my car.

Maybe it's nothing, which would be awesome. Then I would use my new Diablo Trinity Tuner and have some fun.

I bought the car in Grand Prairie. Probably close to you.

It's a long-ass drive, but if you're ever driving over to Fort Worth, holler at me.

Not sure if you ever figured it out but my car does the exact same thing as yours. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and checked everything out with no luck. I was told by someone (I think van at revan racing) when I was upgrading my suspension that this is a common rear end issue. I know this don't help but hope it at least fridge you piece if mind your not alone lol..

There is an occasional rear end noise on mine also in certain gears and speeds, I can mostly hear it in 4th gear crusing; very faint gear noise. I think that's normal if you ask me, my previous M3's had some diff noise at certain RPM's and certain gears...

I would not be too concerned unless it gets worse; can you post a clip of the noise so we can hear it ?

I have a bit of gear noise mostly below 2500 rpm's. I do have some suspension mods. I've never worried about it. Where do you live? I'm no expert by any means but I could drive it for you just to compare it with the sound and feel of my car. I live in the Flower Mound area. You should still have a drive train warranty if you are not over the mileage limit.

Hey, thanks for the offer. It would be great to have another GT500 owner check out my car. I haven't even seen another GT500 since I bought mine, let alone had someone's brain to pick. Let me know when and where.
I live in Princeton, 8 miles east of Mckinney, right off 380.

I took my wheels off and disassembled my calipers and looked at the brake pads. They are fine. But as I was spinning the wheels I noticed the drive line makes strange noises. I am thinking this sound might be the drive line. Maybe normal, maybe not. I have never had a vehicle make noise while in motion.

I can tell you that either my drive line or transmission creates a major amount of heat when driving for 30 minutes or more. I can feel the heat below the center console and beside of the seats. It gets very, very warm.

Is that normal?

Let me know if you are going to be in my area or near Mckinney this weekend. Or if you want me to head your way on Sunday.

In neutral, engine off, let it drift backwards as fast as you can.....check results.. braking and not braking
Jack rear wheels up in neutral and count one turn on drive shaft and measure how far the one drive wheel has turned...get back with results
While wheels are off ground about 1/2 inch, take a piece of 2 x 4 and a crowbar and jack each wheel to check any run out with a dial caliper if you have it.. There should be none.
While under car, check universals and driveshaft backlash

I will check these things. At this point most seem to agree it's rear end noise. It's not the brakes, it's not the rotor. It's either the rear end or something on the drive shaft.

I met up with SuziQ and her brother on Sunday. I took her brother for a ride through the Lowe's parking lot. Windows up, radio and AC off. Got up to 25mph and turned off the engine. Immediately he could hear it. Comes from the middle of the car, right under/behind the back seats. I think I am going to attach a GO Pro camera under there to produce a video.

The noise sounds just like taking an aluminum pan/cooker and slowly rubbing it with a brush. Sssh, ssssh, sssh is the sound you here. Noise it I'm gear, clutch in, cloth out, out of gear.

I am 99 percent sure it's caused by the Ring and Pinion or Pinion bearing. It's not getting any worse, it's not getting any better. Odds are its not causing major harm.

Now I have to decide if I want to locate a Ford Dealer and have them agree to replace the Ring and Pinion.
I don't really want Ford touching my gear as its close to pristine. Ford sometimes causes more hard than good.

I think I will live with it for a while. Then either upgrade the whole rear end or pay a small specialty shop to swap the ring and pinion and bearins. I am not comfortable letting Ford touch it unless I meet a qualified service department that works on Shelbys.

OK. Car is back at Sam Pack Ford to today.
Check out this link on You Tube. Start listening at 58 seconds. Turn your speakers up.

http://youtu.be/cVvJ1DGAF94

The rear end still whirls and whines. Gear noise, like a droning sound. Does it under throttle, on deceleration, engine on our off. But, as I mentioned before, the rear end ticking noise is driving me nuts/

The rear end ticks. Its not the exhaust. You have to be in a parking garage, or beside a wall, or beside a line of parked cars to hear it while driving. Something the sound can bounce off of. I decided to cable tie my Galaxy Note III phone under my car in the parking garage at work. At 50 seconds into the video you can hear what I call "Ticking" It happens when the car is moving only. Engine on or off.

I also asked FOrd to look at my Car for TSB 8-24-10. Its not related to the issue above, but my car has major noise in the front end on bumps or driving through a yard.

I told Ford not to wash the car. Ask them to change the oil as well. I gave Ford the You Tube Link above. I dont want to hear "We cant duplicate the Ticking" Thats BS. The ticking is always, always there. I told them the wheels had to be on the ground, and they needed to be in a parking garage to hear it, or stick a recorder under the car while driving slowly so the exhaust doesnt drown out the tick.

So combine the gear WHine/ WHirl with the constant never stopping Tick that comes form the rear of the car and what do you have? I have no idea. An unhappy GT 500 owner.

I really want a 2014 SHelby. If they cant fix these rear end noises, and wont do the TSB on the UCA as well, I will probably trade in my 2012.

I took a listen, and I think I hear it, but I don't have a clue what it could be.
It seems that it could be something inside the rear axle housing that is 'rubbing/grinding'...that could explain why it is ALWAYS there. It would probably just change PITCH at different speeds/loads.

Good Luck getting to the bottom of the problem, and be sure to POST UP whatever is found and if/when it is FIXED.

Good Luck!
