Everything I'm seeing is saying FL2087 was superseded by FL2087A. In comparing the photo Chris posted, it's pretty apparent that whatever filter that was, is not the same as the filter Barb posted. See the large void in Chris's photo (red circle). Because we don't have a shot all the way through, I doubt this was the only section like that.

The new filter has substantial reinforced webs, even though it appears to be plastic or some sort of polymer.

Good find John, I didn’t see that. I would still be very surprised if Ford was penny pinching that much to remove the metal for plastic. I’m very skeptical of the “A” filter at this point.

I do not have any additional info means “ I do not really care to take the required effort that would explain my weak answer to your question” “That would mean me finding an engineer who designed your engine and questioning them” “Can’t take the time or energy to do that as Individual customers do not warrant that level of attention and that work is not part of my job description”

That's exactly what I took away from that reply, Jim. We'll see if he returns my email with a less "curt" response.

I agree, Chris. My first thought was a penny pinching action by Ford to reduce the cost of the filter. The second call taker I spoke with at Ford Performance did say that the Engine Production dept. would have done a series of engine stress tests to assure them that the newly designed filter would not fail or be detrimental to the engine's life. It certainly would make sense to do that. Without some further explanation from Mr. Martin Kot, the call taker's supervisor, I'm suspicious as to whether this change was only initiated to save money. I harken back to the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Ever since I bought my '21, these filters have been pretty hard to find. Given the amount of hoarding taking place further affecting availability, this may have had more to do with correcting supply chain issues or vendors that can't deliver product in necessary quantities. As far as oil pressure, you're oil pump is trying to displace oil through very tiny orifices and tight clearance bearing surfaces, and yes it will be quite high when the oil is cold and thick. It should not be the filter media creating that pressure. For a filter to collapse like the one in the picture, I have to wonder if the filter wasn't somehow clogged or some ham-fisted tech broke the internal frame on installation.

I agree, John. I'm always a bit skeptical of the accuracy of pictures on the internet. Yes, there have been shortages for our current filter. Did they cancel their vendor and find someone else, hence the different internals? I'd just like Mr. Kot to be more forthcoming with an explanation such as "we found a new distributer due to past shortages" or "we tested this new filter on your 5.2 engines and found them to be up to the task and safe for your car's longevity" and "it was a savings from the new vendor and the bean counter's liked that, as well."
I'm hoping he will respond to my email today and provide me with more pertinent info, which I will pass on to the membership.

I get it, I just wouldn't hold my breath waiting on a legit answer.

Rock auto had the best price I found at $39.79, I just grabbed a backup stash.
I bought 2 cases (6 each) from Jeff at Middleton this morning for $30 per filter. Not sure if he has any more on hand.

I didn't hear from Mr. Kot via email today. In his defense, he may have to reach out to a different division to get me an answer. I got the distinct impression from the two FP call takers I spoke with that Ford Performance does not do a lot of communicating with the multiple other divisions of FMC. I would expect to hear from him the first part of next week. He'll probably respond on my surgery date! 😂

I frequently forget to call him 😂
