Oil filter comparison FL-2087 vs. FL-2087-A

I placed an order with O’Reilly for 2 oil filters (they were cheaper than Rock Auto with a coupon). I received Motorcraft FL2087A instead of what I ordered (FL2087). I double checked my order to make sure I did not make a mistake, nope, ordered the correct one. They have both listed on their website. Called them and the guy that I spoke with had no clue so he said just return them.

I compared the new one to one I already had and I immediately noticed the weight difference between the two. Had to confirm it with a scale.

FL2087 weighs 3.0oz
FL2087A weighs 1.9oz

The interior of the A model has a plastic core vs the metal core on the FL2087.
The A also doesn’t have the plastic cover on both ends.

Are the FL2087 being replaced or someone just pulled the wrong part off the shelf? :unsure:

Usually a suffix change means a superseded part. I looked up the new part number MU2Z-6371-B and it shows up for 5.2 supercharged. It also indicates it replaces FL2087 and KR3Z-6731-A. Sure doesn't look the same. I'm at a loss to tell you what to do.

Ok sorry folks I had to jump in a meeting really quick and wanted to put out an urgent warning before anyone bought the plastic insert FL2087A filters. They are supposed to be a replacement for the GT350 OEM filter. They contain a plastic insert that will stand up to the pressure of the GT350 BUT NOT the pressure of the GT500. The FL2087 is the correct one.

There have been several dealers who used the wrong filter and caused damage to the engine.
Ford sent out an internal bulletin to All Ford Dealer service centers about the problem.

I hadn’t seen the cap-less filter yet but They use to look like this before the part number change.

I am still waiting for a reply from Ford on the Raptor R 5.2 to see which filter it’s supposed to be using. I suspect that with the detuning it might be using the FL2087A.

Here’s what a GT500 does to a GT350 plastic core filter with the caps holding it together.

ALWAYS use the metal core FL2087 filter. I suspect that the caps being removed would cause the filter to fail and break apart causing plastic to be sucked into the crank case. That would be catastrophic.

After reading this chain regarding oil filter Crush I contacted Shelby America directly I was concerned about my GT500 that I readily use for track only
They stand by their filters they've seen this in their performance builds Crush metal or plastic they resolve the issue by redesigning and switching to a Billet type housing instead of the stock housing this apparently eliminated the problem we are seeing, They were confident in using new filter A prefix with plastic liner Along with a new Billet type housing if you want the part number reply
or call Shelby America Parts directly the outer casings approximately $170.00
So Drive hard and fast with confidence again

I don’t think it’s intentional, some window licking desk jockey is randomly making up part numbers and doesn’t know a predator anymore than a voodoo. In fact he probably likes the movies and has no idea they are engines. Just sees 5.2L on a screen and says oh great I’ll just add an A to that number and all will be well. Couple months later 6 GT500 engines are scrapped and everyone is pointing fingers at each other.

I spoke with my parts manager and sure enough he had the FL2087A when I had specifically ordered the FL2087. It does have a plastic liner cage as opposed to the metal cage of the FL2087. Same as you, he didn't see the FL2087 as having been deleted. He's going to research this issue and call me.
I just called the Ford Performance Hot Line 1-800-367-3788. The call taker was also scratching his head about this change as he didn't show the A replacing the old number. He suggested I email them and they will be able to determine what is causing the confusion and email me an answer. My GT350 has no supercharger and is naturally aspirated. The newer 2020+ GT500's may have different oil pressure requirements than the 2019/20 GT350? I'll post Ford's response to me when I receive it. Hopefully, they will clarify the confusion. Meanwhile, I'd damn sure stick with the FL2087 filter.

Mike I just hope that people don’t put these A filters in their car not knowing what is going on. Please let us know what else Ford Performance has to say. The only reason I knew that the A filter was not the correct one is because of all of the information I gather from everyone on this forum.

From my understanding, the GT500 has higher oil pressure than the GT350.

Everything I'm seeing is saying FL2087 was superseded by FL2087A. In comparing the photo Chris posted, it's pretty apparent that whatever filter that was, is not the same as the filter Barb posted. See the large void in Chris's photo (red circle). Because we don't have a shot all the way through, I doubt this was the only section like that.

The new filter has substantial reinforced webs, even though it appears to be plastic or some sort of polymer.

Good find John, I didn’t see that. I would still be very surprised if Ford was penny pinching that much to remove the metal for plastic. I’m very skeptical of the “A” filter at this point.

That's exactly what I took away from that reply, Jim. We'll see if he returns my email with a less "curt" response.

I didn't hear from Mr. Kot via email today. In his defense, he may have to reach out to a different division to get me an answer. I got the distinct impression from the two FP call takers I spoke with that Ford Performance does not do a lot of communicating with the multiple other divisions of FMC. I would expect to hear from him the first part of next week. He'll probably respond on my surgery date! 😂

I have 6 on the way. I don't put on as many miles as some of you do, so these will last me a while.

By the time I need another one, we'll know for sure if the replacement part is in fact good enough and if not, they'll either go back to making the originals or have a proper replacement for them.

Mario I hope you get the right ones. As you read on the first post, they sent me the “A” even though I had ordered the correct one. Like you, if I get my hands on a few I will have enough until this gets sorted out.

When Motorcraft supersedes a part the replacement meets or exceeds the orginal part.
Sorry but I do not have any sources to information about this specific Motorcraft part or to any sources that do.
Our group is technical support for the Ford Performance Parts program. If we had the info you were looking for we would pass it on even if its outside of what we do here.

Thanks Barb for posting up Ford's reply! :love: Mr. Kot did state that no new or replacement part is released to the public without first being tested to make sure it meets Ford's requirements. That's sounds reasonable to me if it is carved in stone! But to my way of thinking, a $20K+ flat plane race engine sitting in my car causes me some pause to reflect on the absolute validity of that statement. I've got some FL 2087 filters in my personal stock (5) and will speak with my dealership's parts manager to get me a few more so that they will outlast what time I have left before someone takes my keys away! Had to do that to my Mom so now it looks like "what goes around, comes around" will apply to me, as well.

I thought the A filters were a new item. The two boxes in the picture (not mine) were recently delivered and the A filter box has a date of Nov. 24, 2022

Does this mean Ford decided that our cars didn’t need the reinforcement of the FL2087 filter and our cars can get by with an ecoboost filter? So the A filters are not a new item?

The whole thing is a mess! I bet some dip stick just made a decision without even knowing what the hell they were doing. I absolutely can’t believe an Ecoboost cartridge would be suitable for the GT500. That polymer would need to be Glock polymer to hold up to the pressure.

Chris I am just confused because I thought when a part was replaced and preceded with a letter or number it meant it was a new part.
In theory yes but Ford is known for changing part numbers with new manufacturing for the same parts. They did it several times during the Scamdemic. Some factory in Asia goes into lockdown and they use a different factory and poof we have a new part number. I found that issue when searching for some screws and other items in 2022.

I’m a firm believer that someone saw the new cartridge costing a whole lot less to produce and viola they said hey I’ll save us a ton of money by replacing the old one. Not realizing that the GT500 is a specific cartridge for a reason. It literally says eacoboost on the dang box 😂 I don’t think Mr. Kot knows what he’s talking about.

Someone needs to ask Mr. Kot who at ford would know, like maybe an engineer who could speak to the technical aspects of how an Ecoboost filter is going to work in a $50k engine designed for racing.
