Octane boosters?

The wife and I will be heading out for our first road trip in the Shelby to the NC mountains. We always drive up the back roads from Augusta and go through all the small towns. My experience is that there is a shortage of 93 octane in a lot of them. Of course, I will fuel up at the larger chains and put 93 in as we go but my question is...if I get caught in a pinch and can't find 93, are the octane boosters worth toting with me in an emergency? If so, what brand would you guys recommend?

Very good idea when you consider the cost of a couple of bottles of booster verses the cost of your motor. I don't do long trips much in the Shelby, But I do with my supercharged Tundra usually pulling the toy hauler around the country. I always make sure I have some Torco or NOS Racing formula along just in case and know the mix ratio for either. I always have 30 gallons of good premium in the transfer tank on the toy hauler before heading off as well.

Lots of parts store crap out there with big claims, that are little better than peeing into the tank yourself. Find a brand or two that actually work well and know the mix ratios.
Regards,
Rob

Well after a quick search (such a novel idea lol) it seems with a bone stock motor, I only need to run 91. I have been using 93. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to that or am I just wasting a few cents each time?

Your car will run just fine on 91 octane unless it has an aftermarket 93+ octane tune on it. The difference is 93 octane will give you more advanced timing and therefore more horses.

Also worth mentioning, as elevation goes up (driving into the mountains for instance), your octane requirements go down. This is due to less air pressure at higher elevations resulting in less boost.

Thanks. No tune. So is there a brand at Autozone,Advance or O'Reillys that I could pick up just in case.

Lucas octane booster is supposed to work, and you can buy it at most AutoZone/ORiellly/Advance stores. It's pretty cheap.

Boostane works. Torco works. Boostane is supposed to keep the MMT in suspension better than Torco with their "proprietary carrier". All will coat your plugs to some degree.

So I picked up a couple bottles of Royal Purple and a bottle of Lucas just in case. Hopefully there is no need to use them but better safe than sorry. We are leaving out on the 26th. Hopefully the Blue Ridge Pkwy has reopened since the snow a couple weeks ago.

I've driven to Asheville from Atlanta with my 14 and used 91 and it worked fine.to me o wouldn't fool with i booster.bring speaking and if you get pinging pre ignition use it.

The stock tune is really mild, we have crap gas out here in CA and when mine was stock it never pinged, Torco absolutely works but like all octane boosters it leaves a residue on everything in the combustion chamber, so unless you get a tank of crap and you can hear pinging I wouldn't run it.

Well here in the empire of California, they don’t allow us to have 93 octane but they will let everyone smoke weed... anyway
I use Lucas x3 every other tank. I have ran without it and the car hates me.
The only thing I’ve noticed about using it is that my spark plugs get a reddish hue.
I’ve pulled my cats many times and inspected them along with my O2 sensors after extensive use and they are totally fine.

I use 1/2 bottle VP Octanium to my 93 octane tune. That brings my fuel to 96-97 octane. Not required but data logs showed the motor liked to add 1-2 degrees timing with the VP-O.
