Gear whine..... tired of it

I am on a quest to make my Shelby a little more "street" friendly, so I am going to be swapping out a couple of pieces to make the ride a little more comfortable... and by comfortable I mean QUIETER lol. I am going to be swapping out my current LCAs with the rod ends (and possibly UCA), and have yet ANOTHER gear installed.

This will be the 3rd gear that my hot rod has chewed up and spit out.... the stock 3.31 started making noise, then I replaced with a 3.73 and it lasted about a year, and then I went with a True Trac and put in another fresh 3.73 in an effort to quieten it down. It always starts the same, the gear will be perfectly quiet and then I will take it to the drag strip.... After a few hard launches is starts singing to me while driving down the interstate. At first it will be a soft howl, and then it develops into a loud, ear piercing buzz that will work its way into your brain on a long drive and slowly make you go MAD :domotwak:

I understand why it is happening.... I am trying to launch a 4000lb boat that makes 750ft/lbs RWTQ... and yes, the OBVIOUS solution would be to stay off the dragstrip, but that ain't happenin' either. SO,to anyone that races their car at the strip pretty seriously but still drives it a lot, have you ever experienced the problem or found a solution??

I knew you were gonna say that!! Dangit!!

I'm currently on my 3rd rear diff. I ended up just buying a complete Ford Racing rear diff with 3.73 gears and have had no problems on street tires.
I recently welded in some LCA lowering brackets and installed a new set of drag radials. I'm going to install a set of UPR 8.8 rear diff braces and try to beef up this housing some. They require some tabs to be welded to the axle and they tie the pumpkin to the axle tubes.
I don't know if anything will keep the gears quiet in an 8.8 after hard launches. If this one starts making noise, I might try a ford 9 inch next.

As far as the lower control arms, I am running Steeda billet arms with the poly bushings and they are quiet. I have the Steeda Competition Upper adjustable control arm (with rod end) and their floor pan bracket and have no complaints with it.
Thats good to know about the Steeda arms. I have also contemplated the change to a 9", I just hate the extra expense.... and while I haven't priced a kit for our cars, I can imagine they would be pretty pricey!

The 8.8 is like a good woman. If she is built right she will last a long time... but as time goes by you will never be able to shut her up.
Thats the funniest (and most true) thing I have read all day

Steve I'm about to install UPR UCA, LCA, PHB the upper will be adjustable and the lower will be with poly bushings I will let you know how they make any noise.
Please do! I am still waiting on my DS to be repaired, but it should be back in a few days so I will be ready to order the control arms, gear, and new exhaust pretty soon.

I took mine down 35 yesterday to Austin and had to crank up the radio but if you get bored at least you can manipulate the sound with increase/decrease of the throttle at 80mph seems to be the loudest to me. (stock 3.73 gears)

I'm with kurtdog with the Steeda arms. The lowers are dead quiet, but I do have the slight clunk when rolling in and out of the throttle at low speed. Don't know if that is the upper arm, or just the driveline...there are certainly lots of opinions about it.

On second set of 373's -2 different installers, both known for their work on gears or gt500's. Both quiet right after install, both got the whine after some spirited shifting/launching. Can't hear it with the top down or the stereo cranked up.

I installed a set of 3.73's about 3 years ago with a trutrac. I've got a rod end upper and rod end/poly lowers. It has gotten a little louder in 5 and 6 sometimes, but it's really not that bad. I have changed the gear oil about 4 times already. I've been using Valvoline HiPo 85W-140. It's dino oil which is required with a trutrac.

I think the Boss or the new 500's with trac pack have a diff cooler. I'm not sure which one. I wonder if this would prolong the life of your gears? I don't know if you can purchase this either.

I am betting 3rd gear and it still whines, Sounds like the tubes bent a little a long time ago.. I would swap it to a complete rear end. I am not sure if FRPP is still selling these for like 1200 bucks or not.. and then weld on back bracing.. or. Strange makes a bolt in 9" for the Shelby... Sounds like ford is using a softer gear to keep them from shattering.. ask the guys at the track, Pro Gears get changed out every year...

I'm about two weeks or less from getting a truetrac installed with stronger axles as well. I'll ask my guy about this and see what they say. Mine were dead quiet after the swap to 3.73...until I went out and drove it like I wanted to a few times...then I could hear the gears in 5th mainly...in 6th it's there but a little radio or conversation and you don't focus on it.

Catmonkey,
Thanks for the link. I think some of the Mopar guys had similar problems with the 8 3/4" rear ends that used a crush sleeve and they ended up using a solid sleeve with shims.

Well here is the thing. My car has the michelin PSS tires but I will be keeping stock power. I don't really drag race. I may go to a track or drag strip MAYBE MAYBE once this summer.

Since I'm changing out my gears to fix my whine that the dealership made worse if I was going to do axles that would be the time. I just don't know if its worth it for my purposes.

Can you post a link to both strange and moser axles?

Sorry for being a little late to the conversation, but I have the same exact issue as RTSteve. Started with the factory 3.31's...couple hard launches and some street racing in "Mexico" and they started making some slight whine noise. Figured, no big deal because I hated the stock 3.31 and wanted 3.73's. So I bought some 3.73's and put them in. Yes, I set them up properly...LOL. Anyways, they were quiet as could be. After a few drag strip visits and again, some trips to "Mexico", they started whining at 60mph slightly and now has gotten stupid loud at about 60mph. The whine seems to get worse as the gears heat up because I have hardly any noise the first 5-6 miles into my daily driving and then they get louder and louder as I approach my destination. In 23+ years I have rebuilt and modded many rear ends from Dana rears and GM 8.5's to Ford 8.8's and even 9" too. I have never had such a problem like this before...well, ok, the 8.5's in the 93-02 f-bodies were hit or miss for noise, but NEVER a Ford 8.8.
I also have BMR LCA's and panhard bar with poly on body side and spherical on axle side and I HATE THEM for daily driving comfort and noise. They make the rear ride ruff/harsh as heck. My PH bar on the spherical end knocks like you wouldn't believe over bumps and road imperfections, yes it is tight. I can grab my PH bar spherical end and wiggle it like crazy at the joint recreating the knock when the car is sitting still. As soon as I get to Guam I am done with this crap and will replace everything in the rear with dual poly bushings to gain my DD comfort back.
Some will say that maybe I am getting old and other comments...LOL...that's ok. All I have to say is I just got rid of a 10 sec Mach that I had more suspension mods done on that I could possibly list and I DD the heck out of it and it road absolutely great with no noise. Other Mach owners would even ride in my Mach and compliment the way it road. The s197 chassis in my GT500 is by far better than the old sn95/fox chassis in my Mach so I am a little upset that I made such bad parts choices for my GT500 because I am in love and infatuated with it, but my ride is the worst. :couto:

IMO, if you are not going to race the car with sticky tires or at least run it hard on the street with sticky tires, then there is no need for moser's. The forged beefier axle, such as a moser axle, is mostly needed if you need an axle that will be seeing some track time with sticky tires and abuse. By sticky tires I mean some drag radials, street slick or some full slicks.
Hope I helped.
Cheers!

If something goes wrong with my rear gears and Ford won't cover them under warranty, I plan on going with 3.73's, pinion crush sleeve eliminator and upgrade axles. If I have to pay out money for the repairs, I only want to do it once, might as well make it as bulletproof as possible.

+1 for the crush sleeve eliminator...awesome part without a doubt and makes gear installs a breeze.
Cheers!

Kurtdog, you are forgetting one problem, when you break an axle, all hell breaks loose and you end up hitting a landscaping boulder, and flip the car and almost die... the axle upgrade is less then 2 tires... remember these are the same axle part number ford uses on a v6.. bad choice in my book. But great cars. If you have any doubt, just do it..

Anyone wants to see the hole in my head , pm me and I'll send you pictures...

I know not every thing you read on the internet is true, but Ive dealt with this many times before.. both as a mechanic and as a owner of mods to my own car... on the edmunds article, scroll down to the "Aftermarket Parts and Mods" Section. Also having a friendly report with your local dealer is always good. Bring in doughnuts for the service dept. for an oil change and have things "Looked Over" goes a LONG way... Ive rebuilt engines with cams and rods in them before at the dealer... under warranty...
