MGW 2nd Gear Lockout

Hey All. Was a victim of the dreaded 2nd gear lock out for a min now. It would come and go. Figured out I had to be very slow and deliberate with my 1st - 2nd gear shift in order for it not to happen. Up until I swapped out the stock shifter for the MGW my best time was 11.1 with a 1.8 60ft at 135 mph. I swap out the shifter for the MGW and immediately felt the difference. It’s a lot tighter and the shifts felt firm and locked in place after each shift. I decided to take it to the track and that’s where all my previous pain and suffering disappeared that day. I did 5 passes that day and each pass was under 11secs with an all time best of 10.7 with a 1.6 60ft at 129 mph. Problem solved right??? A week later I go to the track on Fri night and agreed to race a buddy of mine named Stangmode. Yes he’s a you tuber. My confidence level is through the roof because I know I’m gonna have no issue rowing through the gears!! Well SURPRISE SURPRISE SURPRISE!!! Like a colleged aged son or daughter out on their own for the first time IT CAME BACK!! I did 2 passes and each time it completely locked me out of 2nd. I am at my wits end now. I need help!! Could it be the synchros or a throwout bearing?? I have no clue at this point. I thought I was well past this problem but apparently not. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys!!!

Congrats on the great time slip!

Were your rear tires free-spinning (lost traction) when you tried to bang second?

Are you still using the stock clutch fluid line? It is plastic and the maybe a bit of your issue.

There are a few outfits that carry the stainless line.
I have used Revan Racing lines a few times and a definite improvement over stock.

Someone also mentioned changing out the transmission fluid. What are you using in yours??

Could you have damaged a motor or transmission mount? This could affect the alignment of the rear shifter mount to the transmission when under a load.

Very nice car and I'm a regular subscriber to Stangmode so enjoyed the video!

I use Amsoil and that seemed to smooth up shifting. But it does sound like you have more going on than just that.
I believe your right too....the funny thing is though yesterday I went out and did a couple of WOT 1-2 pulls and not the slightest issue. If you click on my responses in Stangmodes video it’ll take you to my page and I posted the 1st test hit after the MGW was installed. My test hits yesterday felt just like that day in my video. Not a grind or nothing. So now I’m 2nd guessing myself....is it me or the car?? Either way I ordered the Revan High Performance Clutch Fluid Line and I ordered the AMP Performance Hybrid Synchros that are specifically designed to fix the 1-2 lockout and grind. Hopefully that does it. I have an 03 & 01 4.6 liter GTs both manual and have never had shifting issues like I do With the Shelby so I leaning towards the car having the issue and not me. Either way though once it’s all resolved I already posted on Stangmodes Instagram WE GETTIN IT ON AGAIN!!! I gotta avenge those Ls I took on Fri lol and hopefully get my ride into the mid to low 10s I know it’s capable of!!!

I'm on my second transmission and both exhibit some drag on the synchronizer for 1-2 shifts before the trans fluid is hot. I'm running Mobil 1 in both and I felt it with whatever the factory fill was for my OEM transmission. I swapped fluid before I installed the 13-14 because I didn't know what was in it.

If you're going to bang gears, I'd let someone rebuild the transmission with the better synchronizers. @'cause went this route and is probably the best solution. I don't have a problem, but I'm not power shifting either. I don't have enough confidence in the shifter and transmission in this car and I no longer possess the cat-like reflexes I possessed 40 years ago. I also take it easy on the transmission when its cold.

No power shifting going on here....too much power for that imo when I say banging gears I mean rowing through the but rather quickly that’s all. I wouldn’t dare try and powershift it especially the way 2nd gear comes in!!! 2nd gear when it hits throws me back in my seat and almost makes me lightheaded when it connects...lol

I still possess the same cat-like reflexes that I had in the early '70's when I used to drag race and I speed shift and power shift all the time and believe you me when I say I can shift I can shift. I just don't power shift into 3rd while still spinning in 2nd anymore, per my video 6 mos. or so back. Ha! Ha! Not bragging or on any sort of ego trip, just telling it like it is. I am just so blessed to have this natural talent. My car is an '09 with the FRPP short throw shifter on a completely stock tranny with 3:73 gears. I am running 730 rwhp and so far I have only missed 2 shifts from second to third, but it was my fault. Luckily I don't get the dreaded 2nd gear lockout on mine. Oh, did I mention that I'm "Old" too.

Hey if you got it you got it!!! I’ve only had mine for about 6 months now so I’m still learning it. In my 03 Gt with 150shot of Nos putting out almost 400rwhp I’d powershift that thing all day but I’ve been on the road in the Shelby and have done a WOT quick 1-2 shift and broke the wheels lose and had to pedal it so I can only imagine what would happen if I powershifted that thing. Once I get this 2nd gear lock out problem resolved though and I’m confident that 2nd will be there whenever I need it to be then I’ll start playing with different shifting techniques. Anymore I just pray right before a race that it’ll go into 2nd...lol Props on your shifting skills...it Def is an art form for sure and when done right just totally adds to the overall driving experience of these awesome machines!!!!

If you’re willing to, let somebody else that knows how to drive, drive your car. Maybe Stangmode. See if he/they have the same issue. If you let several people drive it and none of them have the issue, chances are that it isn’t the car.

If it only happens while you are “under pressure” at the track, it probably isn’t a mechanical issue.

Good Luck!

PS. Stangmode seems to be a really cool cat (in his videos).

Sometimes an anxious driver will get in such a hurry that he'll short press the clutch. Make sure that's not your problem.

Once again I'll post this; do you want to get rid of the sh!tty "second gear grind", the useless "first gear off the line", trashed "OEM Clutches", Sloppy "OEM shifting"...

https://ampperformance.com/

Take the car to a Manufacture Tremec REP...
1. The synchro's have to be replaced, THEY have them. The UPGRADED synchro's let you shift up and down as fast and hard as you CAN shift !
2. Have FIRST and SECOND gears changed to 10-15% higher. Lets you stay in and USE first and second gears without you having to bang immediately up !
3. Install the McLeod RXT 1200 Clutch and assembly; Plate, Discs, Flywheel, bearing, stainless braided line. My OEM came out in eleven pieces at around 3500miles.
4. Install the MGW 2 short throw shifter. Fast and extremely positive accurate shifting !
5. Mobile One oil.
6. BMR; ADJUSTABE: LCA, UCA, Relocates, Trackbar and brace
7. Eibach ProSport lowering springs.
8. DSS, 3.5" one-piece Driveshaft, w/BMR Loop.
9. 373 gears if you don't have them.

A. VMP magic... Gen2r or gen 3 TVS... Injectors, Idler, G2 w/2.4... amazing. G3w/2.65 and 10% over on lower... insane. And Tune!
B. RaceStars w/ MTDR's. (On 15" rear wheels requires Antisway relocates.)
C. A 93 tune w/ a little Boostane.
E. In Excess of 750rwhp and TQ.

NOW you can LAUNCH that thing as nearly as hard as you want... without it being sideways silly.

^^ This IS what it takes... This and the nerve to do it w/o concern of breaking something, and if you do be prepared to fix it.
