4.10 Gears Installed

I had 4.10's installed yesterday by Reed Speed in Mesquite, TX. I highly recommend them to anyone in the north Texas area, and Archie really knows his stuff! It ran about $680 for parts and labor, and I was there from 9:30 am til 5:30. The tolerances were a little tight on the backlash, so there was some down time while Archie waited on the shims.

Here's a few quick thoughts...

LIKES:

  • Feels like the way it should have been delivered from Ford.
  • The clutch is much happier getting the car rolling in 1st gear.
  • Rolling stops around my house much better in 2nd gear.
  • 3rd and 4th considerably quicker - this is what I was shooting for.
  • 5th and 6th now feels like two separate gears.
  • I can now accelerate in 6th gear.
  • No gear whine (this is the result of Archie knowing what he's doing)

DISLIKES:

  • 1st gear is over way too quick.
  • Sorta miss the 70-80 mph I could get in 2nd with the 3.55's.
  • MPG going south because it's more fun to roll the throttle.

Overall I'm very happy with it. From my research it seemed the majority of the opinions told me to go with 4.10's, especially since my 6th gear is a 0.5. If I had an '07-'09 I may have gone with 3.73's, but since I had 3.55's no one seemed to feel the cost would be worth it unless I made the jump to 4.10's.

If anyone is considering it, I'd say go for it. Like I said, it feels like Ford should have put these in to begin with.

Aviator - I don't know what the guys at Reed Speed were smoking when you were there, but they all thought you were a genius. LOL Thanks for turning me on to them!

Great write up of the 4:10 gears. I concur with everything you said. I started to get 3:73's for my 2008 GT 500 but I decided to stay with the stock gears. With all the mods I have done, it is easier to take off now than when stock. The 4:10's are a great track gear if you ever go to the track but you have to shift to second within 60 feet or so. Thanks for the info.

410 gears rock! ...

I think you'll find doing about 70mph eaking out 20 mpg ... based on the trip computer

Yes, they are in Mesquite off Oates on 635. They were either moving in or moving out, but I'm pretty sure they were moving in. It's a pretty big place, and they are right behind the Saturn dealer.

The fastest car in there was an Evo X that's having the motor built for some NFL player in PA. They said it will be 800 hp, and of course AWD.
