what is the web site?

Here's the skinny on all the new info.Carroll Shelby is member #001 and I am member #028

Las Vegas - October 31, 2007 - The legendary Carroll Shelby is creating a new community for enthusiasts of the cars built by his companies. Based in Dearborn, Michigan, “Team Shelby,” is the only club officially recognized by the factory for all vehicles built by Shelby, including 2006 and newer Shelby based Mustangs. The club will officially launch on January 11, 2008, which is Mr. Shelby's 85th birthday.

“People have asked me for years to form a club that will help them really enjoy their Shelby car,” said Carroll Shelby, Founder and CEO of Shelby Automobiles. “There's a new generation of cars, new faces at Shelby and people who want to enjoy their vehicle in new ways. The world has changed over the past 42 years, so we need a club to meet the needs of this new generation. We want to knit together those people with owners of early Shelbys and give everyone new ways to have fun with their high performance vehicle.”

Mr. Shelby imagined a place where owners could talk about their latest conquests at the track, swap E.T's and learn new ways to hot rod their cars. He wanted to link all of those enthusiasts into one “dream garage” populated with Super Snakes, Hertz cars, Cobra's, supercharged Shelby GT's, Mustang GT's with Shelby performance parts, Series 1's, GLH's, Vipers and GT500's. Thus, Team Shelby was born.

“We're experts at creating winning teams by combining our strengths with those of others who have unique talents and skills,” said Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Automobiles. “So we took the same approach to create Team Shelby. It didn't make sense for us to form and operate a club on our own, so we looked for a partner who was a true enthusiast and capable of creating an organization that would give all its members real value. That led us to the S197 Shelby Owners Association.”

Robert Lane and Sharon Elliot founded the S197 Shelby Owners Association in early 2007. After meeting with Boylan, they evolved their organization into Team Shelby (www.TeamShelby.com). It is designed and engineered by real enthusiasts inside and out of Shelby. And just as the Shelby team relies on the latest technology to build their cars and products, Team Shelby will be at the forefront of the latest innovations.

“We're developing a Web site with member only areas that have videos, forums, podcasts, exclusive news and insights straight from the factory,” added Robert Lane. “And we're planning simulcasts briefings with Carroll and other key Shelby execs through the site. Plus, we'll invite Ford and other Shelby partners to communicate with our club members through it. This will enhance the sense of community and give team members the first crack at Shelby news, products and events.”

Team Shelby is not a “virtual club” the group will design and distribute a quarterly e-newsletter and is planning a full compliment of events such as tours of the Ford and Shelby facilities, a 40th anniversary GT500KR reunion, track days, Hertz reunion and other events. Membership includes official Shelby gear and an opportunity to learn more about the development of cars. Anyone can join Team Shelby on line for only $49.95 and receive benefits including:

• First news on all of the products and vehicles coming out of Shelby
• Exclusive access to members only areas of the Club web site
• Quarterly club publication
• Official Team Shelby T-shirt
• Two official club decals
• Shelby Commemorative magazine
• Shelby Key chain
• Two official membership cards
• Shelby Performance Parts catalog and discount on all parts

While interest in current generation Shelbys cars was the foundation for the club, ownership of a Shelby is not required to be a member. The club is dedicated to serving all Shelby enthusiasts past and present including those that own cars built in the 1960's and non-Ford powered vehicles.

“We built Team Shelby for anyone who is passionate about Shelby cars,” added Carroll Shelby. “I'm member #001 and anyone who wants to have fun should join, whether or not they own a Shelby car. I'd love to see GT500's on the track with the high strung GLH's and limited edition Series 1 cars. We'll have a blast and we'll do it the Shelby way.”

I think it's greed too.Maybe not the same greed though.I never got a letter from the SAAC and I am a member.I guess they didn't like what I had to say. They don't consider the new generation Shelbys 2006-2008 to be legitimate Shelbys. They consider them Fords.Shelby has been trying to get out from under the SAAC for years. He doesn't like the direction they are going and the attitudes they have for Shelby owners. There is a lot more to it than meets the eye. This will be a heated debate for years to come. Not everyone has the facts but most have an opinion. The SAAC doesn't seem to realize that's the reason they have to sign an agreement every couple of years. They use the Shelby name to reap profits and judge whos car is really legitimate then cry when the contract doesn't get renewed. If it wasn't for the Shelby name there wouldn't even be an SAAC.

Here is a conversation I had with an SAAC member. Now remember I am a member too but this is typical of a lot of SAAC members. For this I will not renew my membership and they have the nerve to ask me for a contribution to fight Carroll Shelby in court.I think the SAAC did a lot to preserve and document past Shelbys but they need to get back to where they were 30+ years ago.A lot of new Shelby owners get treated like 2nd class citizens and are fed up with it.The 1st post is typical SAAC (not all but way to many) member. The 2nd post is by me.Here is one of my rants:

I do not see where all this consternation comes from regarding SAAC and it stance toward newer Shelbys. The Shelby American Automobile Club was founded to support the cars built by the SHELBY AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE COMPANY. These cars include the Cobras, GT40's, GT350's and GT500's built at SHELBY AMERICAN through 1967. My '67 Shelby is titled and registered as a Shelby, not a Ford, because Shelby American was a honest-to-God manufacturer of automobiles. My '07 GT500 is titled and registered as a Ford. That's because it IS a Ford. It has little more to do with Carrol Shelby than Eddie Bauer has to do with an Eddie Bauer Edition Explorer. Within the SAAC universe, the Cobras are more legit than the Shelby Mustangs, and of the Mustangs the 65's are more legit than the 66's or 67's. The '68's and 69's almost get Honorable Mention statis in the club. This isn't so much snobbery as it is a recognition of the actual history of the Marque

You got to be kidding me?Now we have different class levels of Carroll Shelby legitimacy.I know 1 thing you have convinced me that I won't be an SAAC member any more. You can take your class structure, I don't need that type of friendship. No wonder Carroll Shelby is pulling out of any association with the SAAC.Your attitude is tarnishing his good name.I find it so hard to understand your logic. Now that you won't be using his name, how are you going to structure your car classes?I can see it now,1-Legitimate car Elite,2-Legitimate car Semi- Elite,3-Semi Legitimate car Elite,4-Semi Legitimate Semi Elite,5-Legitimate Ford(please park out back),6-Semi Legitimate Ford(only bring it if you have to) and Ford(not really Legitimate). You guys are so full of yourself you shouldn't be able to own a Shelby.I can say Shelby I am a real person and he wants me to enjoy my car not talk about it over a glass of Cognac

I signed up with Team Shelby this past week. I agree with the club's "inclusive" philosophy to recognize all Shelby's from '65 to present. We are owners of a Shelby automobile just as much as the guy who owns an original '65 GT350. All Shelby owners who want to be involved should be recognized and welcomed to the group!!

I have been a SAAC member for a while. The post above pretty well sums up why I have been unhappy with the SAAC group and its eliteist attitudes. I think this is one major reason CS is pulling his support. He wants a club than is going in a different direction and was not able to influence SAAC to do so.

I also ponyed up for a Team Shelby membership this week and will now let my SAAC membership lapse at the end of 2007. I also find it interesting that one of the largest and best supported SAAC events in the country is now a Team Shelby event. It fits with Mid America's attitudes over the years of welcoming ALL performance fords. Very un SAAC like and has been appreciated by me for many years.

I too am dissappointed that CS and SAAC could not find it in thier ways to move into the 21st century together and embrace all that is Shelby performance. There are already far more new generation Shelbys than all the first gen models combined. The tide has shifted and SAAC refused to grow with the times.

Wonder what SAAC's new name will be?
