If you're interested in doing a track / driving school event, I would highly recommend attending the SVT Cobra 15th Anniversary Celebration / 2008 SVT Cobra & Shelby GT 500 Nationals @ VIR, May 30 - June 1, 2008 in Danville, VA, which is being hosted by the SVT Cobra Mustang Club (SCMC)

http://www.svtcobraclub.com/mainpage.html

VIR Full Course Friday, VIR South Course Sat. & Sun.

Join the SCMC for some on track fun at Virginia International Raceway. The event is our annual National Event. The event consists of three days of open track with in car instruction available, a Saturday Mustang and Ford Show, and a Saturday night banquet.

The open track portion of this event is a school with in car instruction where you can safely drive your car the way it was built to be driven. This portion of the event is limited to the first 100 students/drivers.

Registration for this event is now OPEN.

Please be sure to download both the registration form and the events packet. The registration form is in adobe and MS Word in case you do not have the updated version of Adobe Acrobat.

Car show participants will get to take their car on track during lunch for "parade laps". A professional photographer will be available for you to purchase photos of your car on track and in action.

You can pay on line in the store at http://www.scmcstore.com or mail your entry form to the following address:

SVT Cobra 15th Anniversary Celebration
C/O Tony Sorrentino
P.O. Box 37376
Rock Hill, SC 29732

Lodging:

In anticipation of a large turnout for this event we have arranged for blocks of rooms at two hotels. To make reservations please contact the hotel at the numbers listed below and inform them you are with the SVT Cobra Mustang Club.

Best Western Windsor Inn & Suites 434-483-5000
This is a new all suites facility with ample paking in front of the hotel for trucks and trailers. The rate (total including taxes) will be $80.99 per night for either a room with two double beds or one king bed.

Sleep Inn & Suites 434-793-6090
This is the hotel we stayed at last year and it also has ample parking for trucks and trailers. The rates (total including taxes) will be $97.19 for a room with two double beds and $86.39 for room with a single king bed.

There will be camping at the facility but you will have to pay a camping fee of $25.00 per night and it must be paid to the track.

Don't forget what happened to TahoeGT.......a roll over! It is potentially very dangerous out there at high speeds as I'm sure you know.
Although I wouldn't want a permanent roll bar in my car either.

cool! more GT500's at the event! :D

convertibles are welcome, but you will need a rollbar, unless you plan on doing the touring laps and car show....should be a good turnout! :)

The GT500 guys have been having a very hard time finding a shop worthy enough of making a roll bar for them.

Not that they are any more special, just that it needs to look nice as well as perform good. And not burn up the interior in the process.:D

you can go about it a couple of different ways....a very permanent, custom made welded in 10 point cage, a single hoop 6 point cage, bolted or welded in, etc....one guy has a convertible, and installs/removes his bolt-in cage in a couple of hours....allowing him to do a few track events a year, and being able to remove it for full 4 passenger use for everyday cruising

I've heard that some tracks frown on the bolt-in type.

I would consider a bolt-in, if I could get some track time. Actually, a sleeved and pinned connection would be ideal. It makes for quicker change out.

VIR says it can be bolted or welded.

I havent heard of tracks requiring welded-in cages, but in this day and age, with insurance companies calling the shots, anything is possible....it makes sense to call around to different tracks and ask, then make the decision....a bolted in cage, if done properly, should offer plenty of protection....
