In stock form, the 412 hp Ford Mustang 5.0 GT is indeed a quick car, but now thanks to the efforts of NASCAR driver Dave Ragan and Ford Racing Performance Parts, it has now set the world record for production cars.

During an instrumented test at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee, as part of the World's Fastest Half Mile Speed Trials; Ragan was able to coax his Mustang GT (modified only with a Ford Racing/Whipple Supercharger and FR3 performance handling pack) around 1 lap of the track in just 19.5 seconds. By contrast, a fully prepped NASCAR racer will do the same circuit in 15.5 seconds!

But the most interesting part about all this? Well, for about $45,000 the average guy or gal can basically replicate the car which Raglan drove – a 2011 Mustang GT starts around $30,000, give or take, while the supercharger package, which adds around 212 more hp, costs $7500.

The suspension upgrades, which include lowering springs, adjustable shocks, anti-roll bars, jounce stoppers and a strut tower brace, retails for $1800. So, even adding in labor charges, you're still going to be in the low 40k range by the time all's said and done.

So for the price of a 2011 GT500 or perhaps a soon to be used 2012 you can turn your GT in to a GT500.

Interesting.

Lets’ see them spend the same amount of cash on a GT500 and see what it can do. This is just a publicity stunt. And it worked.

Except it will be lighter and not as cool looking...

Why is it the advertise it is the fastest production car but no ware do they say how fast it realy is?
The track is 1/2 mile? is that on the inside line or outside lane.
1/2 mile in 19.5 sec or 1 mile in 39 sec. is only 92 MPH. What gives? i am calling BS

I read the tags on the bottom of the actual article, and noticed this:
http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/tag/worlds-fastest-half-mile-speed-trials

so, perhaps they think its the worlds fastest production car to run a "Bristol" half mile? I'd be willing to bet my title that the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, (clearly the world's fastest production car) would do this half mile lap in much less than 19.5 seconds. Dwan, gotta agree, i don't get it????? Tune in on Speed, April 2, and maybe we can find out? Perhaps its the fastest production car to run that on Tuesday with no one in the stands, and the moon was behind it? I dunno.....

Its a stunt!! it is advertised as the fastest production car because its the only production car to go around bristol on a timed lap..Guess what if you are the only one racing..there is a 100% chance you will be the winner!! they are nice cars and responed to mods well and there are several pro drivers putting them in the 10s all modded up..That being said in my opinion [which means nothing to anyone but me] Its a car guys will buy, throw slicks and skinnys on and beat the hell out of it then sell it..what a flashback..Isn't that what started the 5.0s heyday!! and yes I was around for that and contributed to it. had my 88 hatchback at the dragway every weekend.
I work with a guy that constantly tells me he is getting a stripped down 5.0 and is going to outrun my Shelby with it..Nice..only problem with his thinking we will be on the interstate from a 60 roll, Not the track from a dig..LOL
