: 2013 Shelby GT500 to Top Camaro ZL1 With Over 600-HP

The introduction of the Camaro ZL1 didn't bring balance to the muscle car wars, it has only reignited them. According to sources inside Ford, the 2013 version of the Shelby GT500 will up its output some more, this time laying down 600-hp.
In fact, it may be more than that, with a 620-hp number pegged. How Ford will get that number is through the use of a larger displacement engine, with the current 5.4-liter block being expanded to 5.8-liters. The current Eaton M112 supercharger will also be traded for a TVS unit – the very same one used in the Corvette ZR1.
With the added power, the 2013 GT500 should hit 60 mph in just about 4.0 seconds (not much change due to traction), while the quarter-mile time should drop by as much as half a second, possibly dipping the super Mustang into the 11 second range.
As for the rest of the vehicle, expect it to keep the solid rear axle – for now.

1 Alibi 03-16-2011, 12:29 PM Ford should have upped the 2012 GT 500 to 575 hp, knowing that the Camaro ZL1 was greenlighted..
GearHead08 03-16-2011, 08:35 PM sweet mother of mayhem i knew i should of held out :D....
murrocket 03-17-2011, 04:23 PM It's ALL good! That car will be SICK!
jrzycobra 03-17-2011, 07:30 PM 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016... Ford & Shelby should give it a break and tell us about it when it gets here.
A lot of hype thrown out there to get people to be unsatisfied with what they have now and buy new.... It's March of 2011 and 2012's are on the lots. What ever happened to the new models coming out in September?

With BOSS 302 already commanding enough attention, the last thing Ford "should" have done would be to up the ante against a product that hadn't even left the drawing board.
ZL1's still over a year away - and 2013 will be a late model year as it stands. The list of things makers "should have" done always cracks me up - when people are buying nonetheless.
Seldoon 04-10-2011, 06:01 PM And when will the ZL1 convertible come out or will it ever? In the meantime I have my GT500 with the Whipple supercharger and some extra horsepower.
breoland 04-11-2011, 08:55 PM I think its great, but with the added hp, they really need to work on getting bigger rear tires for traction. They really need to step it up to a 315 as a minimal and maybe go as far a 335.
all that hp and no traction equals Bad accidents
SlowShelby 04-12-2011, 11:17 AM While I agree with traction, I don't see many pulley and tune gt500 in bad accidents becuase of traction problems.
wanted2b 04-12-2011, 10:12 PM I do believe the GT500 will have no problem w/the ZL1. 556HP and the weight difference will allow the Shelby to run right past the Camaro. I had my name in for a ZL1 and changed my mind for the 2012 Shelby GT 500 instead. The 5.4 is built better than the 6.2. I'm sure that the independent magazines will soon have articles and tests on the two.

I guess you have not been reading the unlucky shelbys thread.
Look at it this way, how many of these shelbys just sit in the garage and are only used only on nice days. then take into count of how many have been totaled. I think the numbers are a lot worse than you think

If you compare the gt500 to the boss, you can see the boss making better times with less power.
SlowShelby 04-14-2011, 11:49 AM Actually, the only head to head test I have seen has the GT500 lapping a track faster than a Laguna Seca ;)
Don't put much stock in mags comparing times fomr cars on the same track, but not the same day.
breoland 04-15-2011, 05:42 AM I have a shelby gt500 and I know what its like to not have any traction what so ever and i am not making anywhere near what is predicted in the 2013. All i am saying is that they need to step up the traction for these cars or else its just going to be a dyno war.

Sell a bond, and buy a new pair of tires. Problem solved....:thinkerg:

Well, that's about all the Supra and GT-R guys have been doing for over a decade. What's that old joke about an 800+HP Supra and 12 second quarter mile times? ... It can be applied to us, too, now. :(
