: 2011 SVTPP -- clunk/grind when turning at full lock

I took the stang to work today even though it was high 30's low 40's all day today.

Going to work wasn't a big deal, no issues except my left upper trim rattling like it always does. Parked in the parking garage and went on to work. 8 hours later, I come out, turn the car on, let it sit for a few moments while the engine's rpms get to a normal rate, and then turn the wheel right close to full lock and reverse slowly.

I then feel/hear an acute grind/clunk noise in the left front wheel well area...it happens a couple times in a row. I think I maybe ran over something I hadn't seen, so I pull up again and look around--nothing.

I pull out again as I'm turning and hear it again! I decide to make a full lock radius circle, both forward and backward, and hear it ever couple seconds.

I think, well, it doesn't seem to have any problems going straight so I still drive home. I stop at the gas station and try to look around at the tire area to see if there's any obstructions, try and see if there's anything caught in the springs, but can't really see too much. I then decide to try the circles again both directions, and even backwards...and nothing.

Could the spring have just gotten really cold and was catching while turning the wheel? I don't think that the ball joints or tie rod ends could be loose or anything...but since I've never heard it before today's cold ass day I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the cold and it's effect on the metal.

I'll be taking it in to the dealer if I hear it again, but in the meantime any ideas as to what might have caused this?

I've noticed a clunk/pop noise coming from the wheel area twice, while reversing with wheel turned. Both times it was early morning, cold, and car had been sitting overnight. First time it happened I thought I ran over a bottle or rock. Hasn't happened lately, and could not find anything out of the norm with inspection. Let me know what they say if you decide to take it in.

That's exactly what I thought!! And the conditions were pretty much the same...car'd been sitting for 8 1/2 hours in the cold. It's gotta be something to do with that. At the same time, it probably shouldn't be doing that.

I'll keep this posted if/when I take it in. I'll have them fix that damn rattling of the a-pillar trim too.

Mine does it as well. I am bringing it in this coming Tuesday for that, excessive noise coming from the rear (3rd time) and the 1-2 grind. Let you know what they tell me.

Wow. Good luck! I've had a couple of instances of grind going into second, but nothing wide open and only on rare occasions. I'm going to try redline tranny oil first and see if that helps.

Never heard a peep from the rear end...what are you hearing?

Many people (seems to be mostly 2011) are having loud noises coming from the rear while doing slow speed turns. Mine does it now while going straight as well but not nearly as loud as when turning.

just turned 1000 last night, been doing it since about 500 miles. Ford says it is "normal" Their fix is to drive in 10 circles one way, 10 the other way, then drive about 20 miles and it will fix it for a period of time. Didn't work on mine. Others have had their gears redone and it fixed it and some gears and axle bearings. The noise I am told is the clutch packs for the differential.

It sounds like the famous "GT500 low speed turning moan". There's tons of posts about this. It's the carbon fiber clutches in the rear end making the noise. Although it is annoying as hell it is considered normal for these cars.

My noise wasn't a moan, it was several acute popping or clunking noises at the front left. But I haven't been able to duplicate it since that night luckily. I'm keeping an ear out for what you're talking about though.

Ford does consider it to be normal. However, if you bitch and moan enough they will do something about it. They are replacing the clutch packs in mine as well as ring & pinion now.

That's good..but it isn't going to solve the problem. It's a design characteristic, not a flaw. My rear end actually was defective, as I heard a humming at all speeds. They replaced the bearings and pinion. The turning moan was gone for awhile but came back in 2000 miles. I just turn the stereo up now.

I've got a little moan now. It's so light though I don't notice unless I pay attention.

Hi all, I experienced the same thing. I have a 2011 SVTPP, 1300 miles. I had been driving her straight for 4 hours, temps about 55. Made a U-turn in a parking lot, was turning w/ wheel fully turned over some bumpy/gravelly road. Then I heard a light metallic clunk, and thought I ran over a can or something. Havent heard the nose since.
