: "Check fuel fill inlet" trouble message

I started getting this message whenever I started the car, about a week ago. I can make the message go away with the reset button, but it comes back at the next startup. As far as I can see, the gate on the fuel neck is fine.

Shortly after first noticing this message, I started getting slight -- but unmistakeable -- gasoline odors in the car when it'd been shut up for a few hours.

As part of several exhaust system changes, there might have been some heat damage to some of the lines above the pipes that hop over the axle, but that would have happened a few months back.

The car shows no trouble codes.

Any ideas about what could be causing this?

Thanx, guys.

Your car does not have a gas cap. There is some thing or obstruction in the filler that is not allowing it to shut properly.

Yup-the spring loaded door is not closing properly. On older cars just a few years ago, with screw-on caps, if it was not sealed (screwed on correctly) the Engine Check light would come on. All you had to do is take it off and re-tighten it. After a few miles of driving the warning would go out. Thinking this is similiar warning--what he said -check the filler snap flap.
Live is so complicated...

PROBLEM SOLVED.

It turns out that a section of the vent, etc. lines that run along over the left exhaust pipe where it hops over the axle had been burned thru and was beginning to leak. This was interpreted by the car's computer as being a leak in the filler lid. Fortunately, the local dealer had this assembly in stock and we replaced it. We also wrapped the exhaust pipes in this area (on both sides) with header wrap.

All's fine.

Wow, good thing you found the problem when you did. We wouldn't want you to have to change your name:)

Hmm maybe I should get mine into dealership soon. This started coming on yesterday and everything in the door area is fine. Like you i can hit reset button while drivingnand it shuts off but about 3 min later it will come back on again. I don't have to shut it off and turn it on to have it come back on it will do it while i am driving ever couple minutes.

Ya when mine did this I was scared it was same issue but didn't smell any gas at all. Was about to take it to dealership and the night before my alarm went off for no apparent reason but when I started my car the warning finally stopped. My guess whatever was stuck came unstuck and set alarm off. So glad in my case it wasn't a dangerous issue like the OP cus that's pretty scary.

Instead of replacing these lines, what happens if they are capped at the EVAP canister?

It'll probably work. Mine melted so that it was sealed, not separated. I never got a warning. I discovered it one day while napping under the car.

FYI: after looking into this capping the lines is not an option. The system alternatively looks for pressure and vacuum or it triggers error codes.

My fix was to replace part# 9E325. My pressure transducer was cracked at the hose attachments.

This whole thing sound kind of scary. I used to have a fire extinguisher in another car, not sure where it went but guess I need to think about getting another one, just in case. I would hate to see my car go up in flames!!!

Can you please post some pictures, what did you do to prevent from reoccurring? How much did the part cost?

Thx in advance,
Gary

The part cost ~$120
Pictures are not needed, if you have get the "check gas cap" warning, just start checking hoses. There are only a few under there. And it is easy to check if you can get under the car with the suspension extended.
You will find it!

If it were a heat issue I would use something as simple spark plug wire heat shield to protect it.

In my case, the hard plastic lines cracked right by the transducer, as there are no heat sources nearby I am not sure what caused the failure. Perhaps it was installed in a bind when new...don't know...
