The next-generation Mustang, that's set to debut in 2013 as a 2014 model and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic American sports car will leave behind its current styling in favor of a bold new direction says Ford‘s global design boss. In a recent interview with Mustangs Daily at the launch of the new Focus ST at the Paris Auto Show, global design head Jay Mays hinted at the progressive new styling planned for the "pretty cool" new Mustang.
"It can't lose the Mustang DNA, but it will have to signal that Mustang has another 50 years of life left in it," he said. "In order to do that we're going to have to take a bit more of a stretch with the car."
Mays wouldn't comment further, but did say the Mustang, like the F-150, would retain its own styling direction apart from the rest of the global vehicle lineup.
Hinting at a more future-proof design, it's also believed the 2014 Mustang will feature an independent rear suspension that would take the already best-in-class package to a whole new level.

bigbudd006 10-06-2010, 04:49 PM why has porsche not changed the overall look of the 911 in 45 years? i think ford should think about that before it messes with the mustang mojo that it has recaptured since the last redesign.
rlhay2 10-06-2010, 04:55 PM They just need to fix the tail lights, get the weight down to ~3700 lbs, and give us an all aluminum, direct injected twin turbocharged ~700 hp V8.
Dr.AtsaL 10-06-2010, 05:37 PM Great...now they are going finally put rear independent suspension. Why haven't they done that already.
bigbudd006 10-06-2010, 05:51 PM if i wanted irs i would buy a ricer or a vette. i can understand though why some of you want irs because it's better in the turns. i hope they offer both but i doubt it....oh and they did make an irs for a couple of years..
Dr.AtsaL 10-06-2010, 05:58 PM Its not only about the turns mate....I actually like them because the offer a smoother ride when you hit bumps in the road etc. Its a great piece of technology that should have been added to the car years ago. Plus...once we have IRS I wonder what excuses the ricers and BMW / Audi fanatics will find to criticize American Muscle :) since currently thats their main ammunition.
bigbudd006 10-06-2010, 06:56 PM very true about it being more comfortable. with all due respect doc if i wanted comfort i would not have bought a gt500. the way i have my car set up i could run over a silver dollar and tell you the date.

Shoot - I'd settle a tail light fix and a diet...

04Venom 10-07-2010, 09:37 PM Guys, the IRS is a great piece of technology that was equipped in the former SVT Cobras. Me personally, I'd take a IRS over a live axle because I love a road course. For those who believe in straight-line action, well the live axle is better.
"The IRS is still a far superior suspension component over the archaic stick axle and you should allow the IRS to prove itself before you throw in the towel on it."

sctrooperlx 10-19-2010, 12:57 PM I say give us a choice either live axle or IRS.That way we dont have to pay the extra 3-5k it will cost for the IRS set up.But im more of a straight line guy myself.
SVT_SRT 10-19-2010, 01:13 PM It be awesome if they gave us a choice, do want your mustang for raod course or drag strip, the could turn this car into one that you can really get personal with for your needs instead of a balance in the middle like every other car.

SteelTownStang 10-19-2010, 03:51 PM I like the retro look... Why fix something that isn't broken? I'm all for performance improvement, but an all new design makes me leery. We definitely don't want another Mustang II...

IRS was in the 2003-2004 cobras,YOU want to talk about WHEEL HOP!
those owners were swapping out the IRS for solid axle.
this is probably why you havent seen IRS on a cobra in a while

Had the 2004. It was not a great sytem then but it was good in the turns. I had alot of fun on Road Atlanta with it. Was really heavy. Hopefully Ford will cut weight with the IRS but we shall see...if not there is 2015 LOL:blowingup:

Guess you learn something new every day :)
sctrooperlx 10-20-2010, 07:23 AM IMO, there is no way there going to offer both types.
Well if they dont i hope they pick the right choice and stay with the solid axle. lol, And if they dont theres allways just a matter of swapping it out for a solid axle just like the 03-04 cobra guys did.

Yeah, but all cars have wheel hop. Including the GT500.

Yeap, those are some problems the 03/04 Cobra has. May be a little pricey, but you could spend about 1G nad have that fixed :)
