: GLD today???
GO-SVT 09-04-2010, 06:52 AM BJ, Steve- Anybody up for 'Da Grove today??? Yes we have a big event going on, but the bulk of that stuff is after 4:00PM. It's only going to be in the 60's today, low humidity, and bright sun to warm the track and the prep will be good because we have fast door-slammers scheduled. Only bummer is the cross/headwind might slow us down a little.
You may not get a ton of passes, but you'll also be forced to let the car cool off.
I should be down there after 10:00AM if anyone wants go come join me...

I'm down in Southern IN. Rode the Wing down. I told Tiffany that if I wasn't coming down here I'd go to Byron (Sat). 60f, low DA and a 25 mph tailwind. Love it.
So, did you go and how did you do???
Riding back up this morning. It's 5am here and 51f is a little brisk in my light jacket. As soon as it's high 50s to 60 I'm on the way home. About 280 mi.
I think Steve was working on Alex's car. It went boom at Slicks Night.

Wasn't a tailwind at GLD, track faces the opposite direction as Byron.
Had to "hotlap" if I wanted to get runs, they let us run time runs until about 3, but then it got crazy, cars all the way around the horseshoe.
Didn't do that great I guess. Car ran slow IMHO but it is what it is I guess. They warned me right away that I better play by the rules. So I never went quicker than 11.71. Never saw higher than 123 MPH either... (that's the "hot" MPH as I haven't installed the heat exchanger yet and that wind was brutal)
I have videos from in the car. All "off idle" with tires at full pressure and no burnout. I figure I'm 100 horses behind ya brother...
It looks like the car is really about the same as the orange one at this point? I was looking at my vids from last year when I went 11.30's and those were in much colder weather, with tire pressure down and big, smoky burnouts. and on my best pass, the wind was blowing so hard out of the south that my burnout smoke was going forward down the track...
Here's a video from in the car:
http://app.onlinephotofiler.com/GalleryFilmstrip.aspx?gallery=265815&mid=5150&mt=Video
If that link fails, go to http://www.gregscars.com and look in the racing pix/videos section. (I would love to get a few Hi-def's from inside your car BJ!)
It's weird, the car went quicker in hotter weather early this summer, but then I also let it cool off for three hours.
/shrug
Should have gone to Byron!!! :silly:
Got a lot of nice comments from all the "old school" racers that were there though. (Time Machine Nationals)

Oh, you'll love this $h!t. I rode the wing to vincennes, in yesterday. Got up this morning to come home and be with my daughter who is home from her first week of college. I get about 20 miles out of town and hear "POP". I pulled over, looked at the tires...looked OK. Checked pressure on the front, but the back is a bitch when it's on the sidestand....in gravel.
So, I trod on. About 25 miles up the road I feel it start to "swim" a bit and I thought it was the road. It gets worse, I pull over.
FLAT REAR TIRE ON A 850 POUND GOLDWING IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, ON A SUNDAY ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND.
I baby it to an intersection where I see veterinarian clinic. I have my Gold Wing club book and start calling members. I get a guy from Terre Haute to drive 40 miles to bring me some fix-a-flat because the towing insurance can't get anyone to come on a Sunday morning, in the middle of nowhere, on a holiday weekend!!! A guy on a H-D stops and offers to go to a nearby farm implement store and get "slime", the green shit you blow into your tires that supposedly seals them. No go on the slime. Put a whole bottle in over a number of times and nada.
The guy from TH shows up and we try Fix a Flat. Fortunately, the vet was working and he had a air tank/compressor.
Still no luck.
We now resort to plugging it from the outside. It holds.
For about 10 miles and the guy following me (from TH) pulls me over and says I'm spraying lime slime all over the place. The plug had popped out.
Now, I'm in a country driveway, on my back, trying to put another plug in. The owner of the house brings a 12v compressor. I fill it up. It holds. I buy the compressor from him (it's a piece of shit, but it worked and it was ten bucks he didn't have this morn).
Now this is about 6 hours since I'd left vincennes, and I've gone about 60 miles. Gee....like a Camaro.
Seems to be holding. The guy and I venture forward and split up on I-70 as he heads home and I decide to take 70 to 57 and up just so I have more places to get help.
30 miles down the road, the plug blows. Through the process again, along side the interstate. This time the compressor quits!!!!!!
I got enough air in it to get to the next off-ramp. I stop, look at the plug and it's gone...with more green crap slung all over the belly of the wing.
I put in another one....wait an hour for it to set up (I think the rubber cement was having probs adhering to the slime coated hole (hey...I was married to her once).
Off I go again. It's now 8 hours. I'm limping along and come to Teutopolis IL (yes, for real). They have a Honda shop, but obviously no open. I start to make a few phone calls and find my cell is dead although i'd had it plugged into the aux outlet. Aha! The compressor didn't quit...I'd blown a fuse.
I pull the side cover, pull every fuse and they're all ok. Then I remember there was an inline when I'd installed the aux outlet. 3 amp. WTF? Who and what uses a 3 amp fuse? Well, this does. I decide I'm heading to Effingham which is at I57 and I70 and they'll have more plugs....more fix a flat...maybe a 3 amp fuse...gas...and some aloe vera because my skin covered noggin is now a blazing inferno from being stranded all day.
No 3 amp, so screw it, I threw in a 10. Yep. compressor works, phone charges. Oh, and the tire is flat again.
So it about an hour before dark and I think the last thing I wanna do is be dicking around plugging tires every 40 miles along side an interstate.
No, actually the LAST thing I want is to do that once I come into the south side of Chicago. It's interstate, but if they don't run your ass over as they do 90mph through there, they will stop and take all your stuff and leave you.
I'm thinking the Comfort Suites, about 50 yds from where I'm at, looks like a fine idea.
Here it is, 8:45pm....I'd brought my laptop....my HTC Evo from Sprint is my wi-fi, I've got 3 big bottles of water...trying to replenish, some beef jerky and chex mix. I couldn't find an actual salt lick.
I've left voicemails, emails and smoke signals for the 3 Honda dealerships around here in hopes that ONE of them will check them and call me. It'll cost me an arm/leg to bring someone in on a holiday, but, hey....I'm made of money (RIGHT!!!)
So, I'm sorry dude, did you say something about drag racing?:silly:
Glad you got out. 100 horses on you? Right! You've got a TVS!! And "stuff". We're probably somewhat close to even. Like we've said, it's a dyno slug. My 131 is good for 620 or so at the tires...and a little more when you consider what the 4.10s do to power (+/- another 10-20 I'd have if I hadn't geared down).
That little Eaton is working it's ass off!!!
Yeah, my three last week were all within 15 min of one another. I hate doing that, but they had it shut down for a long time.
Tires, man....get tires on there!
Larry from SpeedInc got my last run on vid that night but he hasn't posted it anywhere yet. I'll let you know when he does.
Do you have a digital and a mount? I have an old mini-tape thingy and no mount. If you've got em, hook it up in my car when we see each other.
I'd be glad to.
OK....now back to more jerky and water.

Dr.AtsaL 09-05-2010, 10:42 PM Wow...sorry to hear what a terrible time you have had. Sounds worse than what happened to me a few years ago. I went to Cleveland to visit some friends, and on my way back I feel the car shaking and making grinding noises. I stop several times, and I cant figure out what the deuce is going on. Well, about 100 miles from home driving at a speed of 95 mph at 3 am in the morning I feel this hugh thump as if i had hit a gigantic pot-hole or something. I start shifting down and applying the brakes gently and pull over to the left side of the road since I am already in the left lane. I get out...take a flash light and start checking out the tires..but I cant see anything wrong. So I get back in the car and start to try to accelerate slowly, but the car is going now where. So I leave the door open this time and try the same thing..and I see sparks from the rear left tire. I get back out and take a closer look.
Thats when I notice that my brake rotor is sitting on the inside on my rim. Before making this trip I took my car and get 4 new tires...the guy used an impact wrench to install the wheels back on, but with the wrong lug. The wheel was loose and the shaking caused all 5 wheel struts to snap off. I was soooo P.Oed it cost me an arm and leg to get it towed during the x-mas holidays. Took it back to the shop and made the guy fix everything for free.
BJ...Im about 2 hours away from Teutopolis...if things get desperate and you need a hand you can also call me as well. Ill send you a PM with my number.

They didn't. She did a sleepover and they found a stray Goldwing sitting on their doorstep this morning. $600 later I'll have a couple of new tires.
If anyone ever needs a tire plugged, I have a freaking Black Belt in it now.
240 miles. 37 hours. 30 miles (at most) at a time. 8 plugs. A 14 oz bottle of Slime. A can of Fix-A-Flat. 2 plugs that went all the way in. A $10 12v compressor from a old farmer. 2 overnight stays at Comfort Suites. 2 packs of beef jerky. 1 large bag of Chex Mix (I couldn't find a salt lick. My doctor would have shit. High stress and a sodium IV!)
I love my wife dearly, but have never been so glad to see her as when she pulled up last night.
Got home to a big bowl of pasta with her home made carbonara, a 4-finger pour of Grey Goose and a shower. All at the same time.
My side looks like I was beaten with a ball-peen hammer from lying on rocks while dicking with that tire over and over.
Other than that, a fine trip.

Yeah, I'd be happy to mount it in the cockpit. Then you'd see my "ritual" before each run.
I have to pick one side of my nose twice, the other three times. I pull back both my eyes and my ears and make a Spock face. I act like I'm yawning but I'm really not. And finally I do two armpit farts on each side before whistling "I am woman" on the way to the water box.
Come to think of it, maybe you shouldn't bring it.
