: 2nd Trip to the Track and Only 110mph? Is something Wrong?
ponyboy96 08-19-2010, 06:20 PM Well guys, I'm posting this up to ask the question that has been on my mind for quite some time now. I've got a 2010 with 2000 miles on it. I've taken it to the track twice now and both times only managed to trap in the 110 mph range. 60' times have been consistently 1.9-2.1, ET's range from 12.75-13.0.
I'm beginning to wonder if something is wrong with the car and it's not making the power that's advertised or is this just a bad case of heat soak? Anyone have any experience with a car that's down on power?
Both times I've been at the track the temps have been in the mid 90's. I'm shifting at around 6200rpms.

Heat soak

ponyboy96 08-19-2010, 06:40 PM Heat soak

Is heat soak really enough to pull 5-7mph out of the car? That's like pulling 60-80hp out essentially eliminating the blower all together (7-8lbs of boost, 1lb of boost = 10hp)
bigbudd006 08-19-2010, 06:48 PM heat soak is nasty stuff and should be illegal.

I've lost 5-7mph a number of times. Unfortunately the math isn't as exact as you'd think when you're talking loss from heat soak.
Yes, 1lb boost is -/+ 10 hp under the best of conditions. The inverse seems to hurt at a higher rate than the good stuff helps.
My car doesn't dyno for crap, but I've lost 50 rwhp on the first pull on a bad day vs a great day.
Blower motors. Ya gotta love em. But, hey....on a good day, they're kickass.
NOW.... ON A COMPLETLY DIFFERENT SUBJECT......................
You can lose 2-4 mph just by having a worse 60' time!! If you ain't hookin', you ain't building mph.

ponyboy96 09-18-2010, 01:31 PM Well I went to the track last night with the same results. Temps were in the mid 70s though. I made 3 passes, 13.1, 13.1, and a 12.9. MPH all were 110. I'm going to schedule some dyno time and then if it dynos low, to the dealer it's going. Something is not right with this car.

Going from a 12.9 to a 12.0 could simply mean better tires cooler temps. It doesn't take much. First time I went out I ran 13.1's.
bigbudd006 09-18-2010, 02:01 PM the first time i ran mine i was in the 13s also. reasons, lack of experience. stock tires at 32 lbs pressure, lots of wheel spin and florida summer night temps.
Colleton 09-18-2010, 03:25 PM PonyBoy69: What tires are you using? If you're running the stock tires you're probably spinning, reducing your ET and trap speed. Also, you do have traction control turned off, right? That will slow you down as well.

I'm running stock tires. I ran all 3 runs using the 3 different traction control settings: sport mode 13.1, off 13.1, on 12.9.
Colleton 09-18-2010, 05:10 PM It's probably your tires. You haven't let any pressure out of them either, I bet. ...and you need to have TC turned off when making a run.
The 1st time I went to the track I was on stock tires at full pressure. My times were right in line with yours. It got a lot better after I changed tires and dropped pressure at the track.

I was running 30psi in the rears.
Just for the sake of analysis, here are the complete timeslips from last night.
R/T .256 - .164 - .297
60' 2.22 - 2.053 - 2.183
330' 5.803 - 5.748 - 5.692
1/8 8.649 - 8.659 - 8.508
mph 88.94 - 87.65 - 88.02
1000 11.070 - 11.111 - 10.891
1/4 13.132 - 13.185 - 12.938
mph 110.10 - 109.30 - 110.15
TC Off - Sport - On
Launch 2200 - 2000 - 2200
Shift ~6k - ~6k - ~6k
I did miss second gear on the second pass. I stated ~6k on the shifts b/c I know I had the shift light set for that and tried to hit it, but sometimes it was more or less 6k. Anyone notice anything that really stands out?

Well, they're consistent. OK....just for kicks n giggles, try this:
Stock tires @ 20psi
Let the car cool 45 min before you run.
Air your fronts up to 45psi
Traction control OFF
Stage very shallow. Just barely get the STAGED light to flicker.
Oh....by the way. Go around the water box...get them a little wet and burn out just enough to slightly warm them. Literally 2-3 seconds. You shouldn't even see smoke. Heating F1s turns them to grease. Put your driver's side mirror down, so you can see the rear tire. If you see any smoke, get outta there, drying the tires off on the way out.
OK, back to STAGED. TC OFF.
DON'T RACE ANYONE. DON'T WORRY ABOUT CUTTING A GOOD LIGHT.
RPMs at 2,500.
When you're ready to go, trade clutch for throttle as quickly as you can without spinning. This means you'll slip the clutch out of the hole, but get off it as quickly as possible.
Short shift your 1-2 because if you don't, you'll spin. Shift at 5500 and put it back to the floor. Make the rest of your shifts at just over 6,000. Keep it nailed til your SURE youre past the lights. Go pick up your mid 12's @113-114 mph time slip.
Work on that clutch to throttle transition and work on bringing your rpms up on your 1-2 til you're just shy of spinning.
Powershifting your 2-3 will help keep your power up.
Post it up so we can see it.
Be safe and good luck.

Blackmax 09-18-2010, 09:15 PM Keep it up Ponyboy, listen to the guys on here and keep posting. Soon you will break 12 sec for the first time and have bragging rights. :)
ponyboy96 09-19-2010, 06:54 AM Thanks for the responses. I'm definitely going to give that a try vnmous1. I had been wondering what other people were shifting at, tire pressures, etc... I'll be sure to post up the results.

Wow! That was very informative. Thanks bj.
CobraRoofer 09-22-2010, 01:34 PM If it makes you feel any better, I ran a 12.59 @ 117 mph with all of the mods i have! I'm lacking proper tires and tons of experience! These cars have great potential, it just seems there is always a variable that gets in the way, in my case, that variable is experience cause i know that my car could do better if Vnmous1 was behind the wheels!
