Carroll Shelby's own tuning company Shelby American has announced the return of the GT350 model, debuting it at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale 45 years after the original GT350 was released.

Based on the new 2011 Mustang GT, the GT350 gets a Ford Racing supercharged mated to the stock car's 5.0-liter V8 to make roughly 500-hp – which shouldn't be hard considering the stock motor already makes 412-hp. The engine also gets some bling with Blue Shelby GT350 valve covers and billet caps.

In addition, the GT350 conversion includes a complete aero kit with a dual central-exit exhaust system, 19-inch Cragar wheels, Goodyear tires and a Baer six-piston front brake setup up front. Several changes have been made to the suspension with Ford Racing springs, struts, sway bars and adjustable camber/caster plates.

"In 1964, Ford Motor Company asked Shelby American to turn their secretary's car into a race winner to help them sell Mustangs," said Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby American. "Our Shelby GT350 ruled its class at the track and was feared by GM and Chrysler owners on the street. Enthusiasts have anticipated the GT350's return since it went out of production in 1970. Now my band of hot rodders has created a car worthy of the name."

All GT350 conversions are performed at Shelby American's facility in Las Vegas for a price of $33,995 (plus the cost of the car). Yikes!

You could by the KR for 80K, then in 2010 you could by the GT500 with the same motor as the KR with a more usful suspension and less glued on crap for 50K. Now you can get a slower GT 350 with more glued on crap for 70K. See a patern ? I have loved Shelby Mustangs since I was a kid. I am glad I waited for the 2010 Shelby from Ford. I can not see giving Carrol $ constantly for glued on crap and under performing versions of cars with his name sake. Will the worlds biggest ego burse ? Nope, send mo money. Ford pls make an independant rear suspension PLEASE.

Great and exciting job on the reveal. Wish I could have been there. Though I think some tweaks are needed.

Initial thoughts - it all comes off a little too 'ricer' for me. The rear is much better than stock, though skips a diffuser altogether - and that could have slimmed the look a bit. It looks too fat from behind. The backup lamps look out of place as well as the SHELBY lettering (on the bumper - wtf?) I know the front 2-piece will be made 1-piece though it still looks a bit overdone. The rockers look slapped on. The 20" Cragar wheels will be 19" on delivery, but I'm not a fan. I didn't like the Cragars on the original either. And way too much 'GT350' all over. Get it off the hood - and why is GT350 needed twice within a foot on the side? Leave it on the rocker - and change the badge to '5.0' or 'Powered by Ford'.

Overall - too much effort in incorprating all years of GT350. I thought it should be more an homage to the 45th anniversary of the original.

Here's the just released MT article with pics and vid...

I can't get excited about it.
It cost more than my GT500,and lacks the HP.
I do like the rear spoiler.
However,I bet he sells every one he builds.

Personally my expectations where higher. Maybe put some old school Cragars on the car. Get rid of some of the plastic effects.

Just disappointing.

I don't find it very attractive. Considering a badge with such fantastic history I was expecting more, especially for the dough. Possibly the "massive" rear end could be broken up by continuing the stripes to the pipes. For my money I, personally, would have preferred seeing less aero and more in the performance arena. It's not........clean looking.

I totally agree. No way I'd drop $70K on it.

Why IRS? Install a watts link. Much stronger, will handle as good and weighs less with fewer parts to break! (KISS)
