I'm using Motorcraft but order it from k-mansparts.com for $7.19 a quart. You need 6 1/2 quarts so order 7.....Some of the dealers will rape you (Bob Hurley Ford Tulsa $17.00 a quart....thanks...no warning on that screw). I would also get your own Ford racing filter. (try e-bay; Downs Ford Racing Store). If you show up with the parts all they can get you for is the labor...I know I could do it myself but I used to do it for a living and don't feel like it now.

You can get the Castrol cheaper and some people have found sales at auto parts stores and I know some are running mobil 1. I just prefer to use what Ford wants me to use but to each his own. I also take it to Ford so there is a record of it being serviced.

my 2 cts.

If you didn't know, all this information is in your owner's manual. Take some time to read through it. :thinkerg:

Motorcraft FL-820S; you can get it at Walmart for about $4.

I'm calling Ford and asking why the dealer only carries Mobil and has been told to use it(according to the dealer).

There are several manuals
1) Mustang Owner's Manual: Tells how things work
2) Scheduled Maintenance Guide: Lists maint schrdules/guidelines.
3) Shelby GT500 Supplement: Covers areas specific to GT500s

Read the Supplement first then the Maint Guide. :pimp:

I received a Ford coupon in the mail for a Free first service. Depending on what they charge for the next one I may or may not continue to use the serv dept for the oil/filter changes.

Good Luck!

I will,, believe me. Thing is, from my experience, and that experience ranges from a 67 GT500 (#1160) , a 2010 SS Camaro ( traded for the Shelby), 2 1987 Grand Nationals, 70 Vette, 70 454 LS6 Chevelle (450 horse car) , 68 390 Mustang, 2 5.0 Foxes, gah this list could go on, ive literally lost my butt in American muscle over the years ,,
but guys like ones here on this forum have knowledge of what is truly best for an engine and not neccessarily what company paid the most money to end up printed in the manual ( or on the gas cap like BP...)
Dont get me wrong, your advice to read the manual is right on, I just didnt know if through experience here it was determined that A is better than B even though B is in the manual. Oh and I only have the GT500 now. Each of those cars led to the others.Only one rooster in the hen house at a time. And I STILL have a hefty payment on the Shelby , which i plan on keeping.

Roush also has the oil under their name. It also meets spec. Mobile 1 does not

I put 32K miles on my 2007 GT500 using the Castrol full-synthetic 5w-50 oil. Buying the more expensive Motorcraft recommended stuff is not going to provide any better protection for your engine.

Valvoline has cancelled the program with Roush. Once remaining stock is gone, it's gone.

Also, the Mobil 1 EXCEEDS that spec for an SM oil in 5w50. Mobil 1 in 5w50 is also a REAL group IV synthetic. Castrol and Motorcraft are group III, which is hydrocracked dino oil and shouldn't even be called synthetic.

The manual says to use oil that meets the WSS********B, not A spec. There are 3 makers of the oil 5w-50 full synthetic that can be used in the gt500. ford, castrol and valvoline roush. These three make a statement "in writing" on line that they meet this B spec for use in the gt500. Mobil 1 does NOT make this statement because they do not want to warranty the $18000.00 engine due to oil failure. Valvoline roush is hard to find. You cannot order 7 qts of ford oil from kmans parts, the minimum is 20-24. I checked with a castrol oil change place here in texas and they were not even aware of the oil,,,so what do ya do? My ford dealership was not aware that the gt500 used a different oil.

Thanks for all the info guys. I ended up at a Ford Dealership and coughed up 8 bucks a qt for the Motorcraft full synth 5/50 with the "B" rating specific to GT500 and GT. Someone else said it best,, why skimp on a 45 thousand dollar car. Im gonna stick with the Mororcraft B rated 5/50 since thats what the builders say to use and it seems to be the majority rule here with the guys in the know.

This is not true; I have ordered and received 7 quarts of Motorcraft 5W50 from K-man. They have a maximum limit of 24 quarts per order; there is no minimum.

MotorCraft..How I look at it if anything ever goes wrong they can't point any fingers if I'm using the specific product they say to use.

I stopped by my local ford dealer and picked up a case of motorcraft 5-w50 and two ford racing oil filters for 109.00 dollars then I forgot I needed a half quart so I got one quart of castrol 5-w50 at the local parts store so I will have a change for two times. I don't think a 1/2 quart of castrol will hert anything.

New to posting here, but have been on the Shelby site since I bought my 500 over a year and a half ago. I have been using the Roush / Valvoline full synthetic that is designed for the GT500 and the P-51. I am very happy. I used to only use Mobile one, and loved it on my other cars, but their 5-50 is not supposed to be an exact match for our engine.
Also, my buddy who runs a garage said that the only brands he would use in most cars are Mobile One, Royale Purple, or the Valvoline. He said Motorcraft was ok, but make sure it is changed regularly if you use. (It breaks down more quickly than some of the others.

I use the Mobile One oil filter.
