Here's a clip of the Borla (FRPP)...

Which do you prefer???
oldimp 11-19-2006, 06:41 PM I prefer the Borlas between the two here, but I have Magnaflows on mine and they are more like the sound of the Borlas.
busababy 11-19-2006, 07:39 PM I agree..the borla's have a great sound...didn't have much of a choice when I got my car...I would have waited but I also have a disease that does not allow me to wait.. I have to buy now :)
dsabldvt 11-19-2006, 08:07 PM Does anyone know what kind of mufflers are on the GT500 as original equipment. I'd be curious to know the type and # to do alittle research on them before I decide if I want to change or not. I really think the stock exhaust sound pretty nice. Maybe thats just old age talking but I'd rather put my money into things that will increase the power more dramatically. Thanks for any info.

Didn't you put FRPP's on? If so, you actually did put the Borla's on, as FRPP's are made by Borla (just a different name stamped on the tip and a different part number). :)
I have the Borla/FRPP on my Shelby so I'm a little biased with my preference!! :)

I was waiting for 07 SHELBY to answer this one for you, but he told me some time back that they are the muffler from the 6-cylinder Mustang. I am going from memory and I am old! He will give us the straight skinny as soon as he sees these posts!

Hey bud, what's going on?I saw the post. He's right they are V6 automatic mufflers. He's not old just Oldimp. He's got a mind like a steel trap!....................07....................... ......
oldimp 11-21-2006, 04:39 PM Yeah, right!
oldimp 11-21-2006, 04:40 PM A rusty, bent up, old steel trap!
dsabldvt 11-21-2006, 05:47 PM I was definitely referring to myself seeing as how I am 57.

I'm seven months away from 57 myself! This car helps bring out the youth in you, doesn't it?

I went down to the production line this morning. The mufflers on the Shelby are from the 4.6L V8 automatic not the V6 automatic. The 4.6L V8 automatic and the 4.6L V8 manual mufflers are also different from one another.Sorry for any confusion.....................07.................. ....................

Thanks 07. Are these mufflers different then the 4.6L V8 "manual"?

Yes they are different.
2008Shelby 11-22-2006, 03:56 PM Yes they are different.
Thanks. That confirms what I heard, that the manual GT mufflers were too loud for the GT500 so they had to go with the "auto" ones.
dsabldvt 11-22-2006, 05:19 PM oldimp;
I ccan definitely say that it brings out the youth in me. I really love driving the car. After tomorrow, I will have over 1000 miles on it in less than 2 weeks. Hopefully I can given it a rest, but once I input the tune, I may have to try it out again for a while.
yenrod 11-25-2006, 09:29 AM What/Which tune are you going to do? Have you done any other mods?
dsabldvt 11-25-2006, 09:55 AM I put in the 93 octane tune from Justin @ VMP Tuning. I plan on getting his CAI when he gets it finished because he will update my tune for free and his CAI only costs between $200-$250. At least that is what he has been estimating. The only other mod may be putting in 3.55's or 3.73's. I pretty happy with the exhaust right now but I have a friend who does some custom exhausts and I plan on talking to him.
yenrod 11-25-2006, 10:00 AM What are your opinions of the tune vs. stock?
dsabldvt 11-25-2006, 01:39 PM There does seem to be significant improvement in throttle response and power. It seems to be much easier to break them loose in 1st and 2nd without the TC on.
HorseTraderDave 11-26-2006, 03:35 PM Imp, I think I would like the Magnaflows also. Do you have a clip you can post?
Thanks,
Dave

I hope I have it, Dave! Try this link:

Well, it seems to work. Sorry the quality is so bad.
yenrod 11-29-2006, 05:28 AM Thanks for the clip! That sounds pretty sweet. Do the Mags have any drone to them?
oldimp 11-29-2006, 09:14 AM Thanks for the clip! That sounds pretty sweet. Do the Mags have any drone to them?
Yes, there is a pretty significant drone at or around 2k rpm. That has been my normal highway cruising zone I guess. It isn't too terrible, but more than the stock mufflers for sure! You can still carry on a conversation fairly easily, but it was really quiet with the stock exhaust. Not enough to make me want to change back to stock though!
I don't remember where I got mine right now, but I am pretty sure they were $370 including shipping. I will look it up when I get home and edit this post.
I got them off of eBay, they came down to my "Best Offer". performancepeddler: customerservice@performancepeddler.com

yenrod 11-29-2006, 07:19 PM Cool, thanks for the information. I have always used Flowmasters on all of my vehicles, including a 1991 Mustang GT. I have generally been pleased with them, but I am hesitant to just get something to put on my GT500. I am trying to get as many sound clips/feedback as possible before dropping the hammer. One thing is for sure....it is waaaay too quiet stock!

My buddy put the Flowmasters on his '04 Mustang GT (has a Roush Stage 1 now) and they really sounded great!
ShelbyWise 11-30-2006, 07:09 AM  Do any of these aftermarket cat back systems allow you to use the stock tailpipe? I'm not sure I like the doublewalled polished stainless look of the ones I've seen photos of...Thanks :)

Every one that I have seen has the tail pipe welded in place. I don't see why a muffler shop couldn't change them out for you though.
dsabldvt 11-30-2006, 08:51 AM Why can't a muffler shop just replace the stock mufflers with high performance mufflers and save a bunch of money. I have checked on prices of mufflers and they are a lot less than the systems out there.

Basicly that is what you are doing.Unless you want to cut the pipe on either side of the muffler and have it welded back together on a new muffler.Look at the picture below, you are not changing anything but the muffler and the tips.I am not sure if you could find a performance muffler with clamps.I am not sure it would be cost effective.$389.00.The after market axle backs are easy to install.
Shelbywise I know it is a personal preference but all the after market tips look pretty nice.
busababy 12-02-2006, 04:10 PM Another advantage for the axle back is you don't cut your factory exhaust...so if the day comes and you want to sell it you tell the new owner that the factory axle back can be put on in 30 minutes to put it back to factory if that is what they want. When I took mine off I put them in a box with bubble wrap around them and put them in my closet so they should look like new if the day comes that I sell my car. I think flowmasters are around $ 70.00 or so from our local exhaust shop, than the double wall 3.5 inch tips are like $ 35.00 to $ 40.00 each so that with labor is somewhere around $ 250.00 or under so it would be cheaper. But like I said I like the factory fit and no monkeys with the stock exhaust.
