Just bought an 09 Vapor/blk Stripes and have ordered the normal mods. Just wondering if anyone had any time improvements on gear swaps. Thanks

Mine performs a lot better with 373s however, I'm thinking of going back to factory gears as I don't get on it much anymore and it did cut my mileage.
373 gears + foot in the throttle all the time = 12.9 mpg :pimp:

I have not dragged. I can share with you that on a 2010 first gear is almost pointless now. Very successful with starting out in second gear. Car feels like it pulls quicker. No concern here about gas mileage, this is a play car for me.

I really want to do the 3:73 gearing as well, however i have heard MANY complaints about the rear end howling after the installs, therefore I am going to build a 9" with 4:11's and run 28" bias slicks on 15" rims, one piece driveshaft and side step the clutch at 4-5K RPM's that should get me an easy flat 11 seconds in a quarter with my current pulley and tune mod (i have already run a 11.6 with MT ET streets)
when the time comes to trade up to the 2011 car i will re-install the factory rear end, remove all the mods and sell as a stocker.

Just a suggestion. You may want to rethink that 4.11 and 28" tire combo.

If you're going for a tall tire, look 3.73. Either way, don't just guess. Do the math and figure out what time you need for your 60' at your power combo. Also figure out what this is in mph during that first 60'. You'll find that you can't get there from here. And, for the record, I've NEVER heard a quiet set of tall gears. Ever.

No whine here, I too was concerned but if you can find someone who knows what they are doing you will not have any whine.

VNMOUS1 up there I beleive has 4:10 gears and his 60' times are outstanding.

If you have whine with 3:55s 3:73s or 4:10s, your installer did a very poor job, especially if they used FRPP parts. If you went with 3:90s, they are not made by ford and most likely have a whine due to manufacturing process. Nothing worse than a whine while your touring down the highway.

3.73 is the perfect combo for street and track use!

3.73 here.

Did this M.A.S.H. style in the driveway with help of my cousin, FORD OEM 3.73 gears, and a whole lot of prayer - even re-used stock pinion bearing! What a day. That was 12k miles ago - no whine.

3.73 also helps to increase RPM faster to get into peak power range, and is a hell of a lot of fun to drive. Someone said 1st gear was useless - well nearly as useless as 6th gear was with stock rear end. It all depends on what you want.

I've not heard any complaints here with guys going to 3.73 except for some warnings issued to folks looking to drag race with super high HP plans....

Not sure who posted about starting in 2nd. I can't help but think this might be a bad idea. Why do you start in 2nd? Not enough traction/too much power& torque in 1st seems the obvious answer. What tires are you running?

This would be me, driving around town low RPM I have no issues with starting in second. Maybe a bad idea, I guess time will tell.

Won't hurt it if it's not lugging it. Trust me, with 4.10s, I'm starting in 2nd a lot. Hell, I can put it in 2nd and just let the clutch out slowly with no gas and it does just fine!

My perfect combo....4.10s and a 28" tire. Brings it down to a 3.81

3.73 vs 3.31 = -1mpg@65mph, 650ft msl, standard (56-ish) day. If Joe gets 12mpg with his 3.73's he'll get 13mpg with 3.31's.

At $3.00/gal, one would have to drive 25,000 miles to pay for the price of gears and installation to go back to 3.31's.

Probably not a sound investment. Is it worth 2 cents per mile more for the ooomph of 3.73's vs 3.31's? Uh....yeah, for me it would be. But I'm just real spendy like that.

I can vouch for BJ's calculation.
Almost as if he looked at my mpg average display.................:)

4.10's here-should have went with 4.56!!!!!!!

I would never ever consider a 3.73 unless I was making more than 700rwhp-530rwhp11.66@121.3mph

Thanks for reading and don't cheat yourself, buy a real gear!!!!!!!!

If you remember correctly or if you can remember back that far, I made this write up!!!! LOL

It is a good source of info for any body that is considering a gear or tire size change!!!!!

with a 1.0 4th gear ratio and traping 122mph@6000rpm(me) an 4.56 would be the perfect gear for a 29inch tall tire.

I picked the 4.10 because it good to 130mph@6000rpm in 4th and I thought of the future, MORE POWER!!!!Lol

sorry guys, I like to drag race!
