: Road Trip,Romeo Engine Plant
07 SHELBY 09-15-2006, 11:58 AM I was thinking of trying to get a plant tour of the Romeo Engine Plant early next summer. You know thats where they have the 8 mechanics that hand build the niche engines for the Shelbys,Cobras and Lightning vehicles.I would like to go there with my Shelby and get photos with the 2 mechanics that built my engine. It is located about an hour north of Detroit,Mi.I was shooting for early June but open for suggestions. It is awhile off but if anyone is interested in going maybe we could all go together in a pack. That would be soo cool.Anyways any comments, suggestions or concerns should be directed in this thread.Let me know if you are seriously interested................07...................... ...

A Friday would be convenient for me. Yahoo says it is 812 miles from Ladson to Temperance (12 1/2 hours). I can do that in a day, or at least I used to be able to!

12 1/2 hours? Let's see... in an '07 Shelby... hmmmm.... you could probably make that trip in about 6 hours even with a few pit stops. :D
Am I stirring up trouble?
fee5707 09-16-2006, 12:44 AM Awesome idea- definitely in!
07 - awesome idea. Friday works best for me. It was so cool to see the signitures of the mechanics who built my engine when I opened up my hood.

rpretzel 09-18-2006, 07:14 PM Sounds like a great time, but I'm not sure I'm up for a 12-hour drive across the great plains. Even in a Shelby, that's going to be a brutal drive. Then again, I'll have to wait 'til I get my Shelby. My mind may change.

07 Shelby I would be honored to be included in the trip to Romeo to talk to the guys who built my engine. Just let me know when and where. Take care Mustangnut
07 SHELBY 09-23-2006, 01:42 PM I talked to the rep. today from Romeo Engine Plant. He confirmed there is no break in additive to the oil from the factory. It goes to AAI with 5w50 pure synthetic. He said they do a few tests on the engines then they run them.
I also talked to him about the plant tour.He said they do it all the time just give him a date.He also gave me his phone # so I could get a hold of him any time.I know it is next year but what month? The day is going to be on a Friday...............................07........... ..................................

I still have one in high school, so a June or July date would help a little with our planning.
shlbysvt 09-25-2006, 05:48 PM Just came out of Manhattan in traffic that tested my clutch and a-s capabilities. I am still considering the road trip but will, if joining, be towing my baby with nothing else but a Ford product.(F150 Performance White:D). The ride for me would be too much to bear for my butt and pride and joy. June is preferable for me.
shlbysvt 11-30-2006, 04:21 PM Talk to me 07! This is what dreams are made of. Hope all builders will be present at our visit in June, July or what ever month as long as we are there for the Kodak moment. Keep this moment alive!;) As the winter is just coming upon us.
SN8KBYT 11-30-2006, 07:54 PM I'm in, that will only take me about 4 hours to make from Fort Wayne.:D

I'm talking. We are still a go.I would say end of June to end of July.It would be kind of hard to have people commit so far in advance. This spring I will make an appointment at Romeo Engine plant and whomever would like to go is welcome.

07 SHELBY 03-09-2007, 02:35 PM Update,
I talked to the plant superintendant twice today at Romeo Engine Plant.I gave him all the names of the engine builders that you guys gave me and he was gracious enough and is going verify who is still left standing after the buyouts. He personally knew quite a few who are still there but he said he will call back next week with the names. He said Human Resource (DAWN) will call me back also with times and a date.As soon as I know I will post the info. The people there were just great and they are looking forward to having us.
I also found out that they have expanded the engine builders to 15 teams(30 people) and are going to add more.We will be able to take pictures with the engine builders and take a tour.Let me know if you have any questions and I will ask.Looks like everything is a go and they are happy we are comming and they want to see our rides...........
07 SHELBY 03-09-2007, 02:53 PM This is a e-mail I just received from Romeo Engine Plant.
Dawn,
Per our earlier discussion, Fred xxxxxxx is the gentleman that contacted me today. He represents a group of people that have purchased GT500 Shelby Mustangs and they would like to visit the Niche Line and the operators that assembled their engines. They have a WEB site dedicated to the vehicle (www.FordGT500.com) and several would be traveling here from out of state. Fred is an employee at AAI and was interested in arranging the visit mid June.
Thanks,
John

The plant manager of Romeo Engine Plant just called me with some news.I gave him the list of engine builders and these are the builders that have retired.
1-Gary Smith
2-Doug Campbell
3-Ronald Anderson
4-Stephen Fae
So please take note! The 1st two guys are the ones that built my motor,oh well.
Harley99FB=There is no Patrick Shannon, must be another name.
SN8KBYT= There is no Geria Sotree, this must also be another name.
I was also informed that the plant tour is a go but they can't give me a firm time or date for another 2 weeks and I will be contacted by the head of H.R.
rpretzel 03-16-2007, 10:29 AM 07, If the retired guys knew a special trip was planned to visit them, maybe they would show up. Might the plant manager still have contact info for them?
Just a thought.

I am just waiting for a confirmed date and then I will try to contact them.Ford can't give out personal info and they can't call them at home but I will.I will try to contact all 4 people retired.

Parker, CO is about 1,300 miles from Detroit. That's a REALLY long haul. If timing works out, we'll probably fly in. My parents are coming to visit "sometime" in June, and we have a wedding to attend in SoCal in mid-July. I hope this trip doesn't conflict.
07 SHELBY 04-03-2007, 10:38 AM I talked to HR at Romeo but the person that is setting this up is out till 4-10-2007.Oh,another day at Ford.
07 SHELBY 04-12-2007, 09:34 AM Well,
I got a call and an e-mail yesterday and 3 e-mails today. It is final. The date and time for the Romeo Engine Plant tour will be June 15th at 11:00am.It took awhile but that is big business.I was asked to give this statement so please make a mental note of this,
"Please let me know mid-week (June 12-13) the final number of people who will be coming on the tour. Please remind them it is an industrial setting, dress appropriately. They'll need closed toed shoes, low/no heels, and we'll provide safety glasses & earplugs for the tour."
Any questions please post in this thread or PM me.I am looking forward to this and meeting all people that will be attending.Hope you can make it.
psherman1 04-12-2007, 09:43 AM Will there be any restrictions on video recordings or still pictures?
07 SHELBY 04-12-2007, 09:52 AM Will there be any restrictions on video recordings or still pictures?
My original intention was to go and take pictures of the builders with my Shelby.Romeo Engine agreed to that but I don't know if they will let you video the whole tour if that's what you are asking. Both of my builders have retired but I am still committed to going, with pleasure. Also, the person I am dealing with in H.R. at Romeo just e-mailed me and said she will bring her Shelby that day if it is not raining, how cool!
07 SHELBY 04-12-2007, 12:30 PM Ok here's the strange part about this whole thing. The person I have been dealing with from HR at Romeo Engine Plant I know, but just found out.I used to work with her 12 years ago here at AAI.She moved on and got married and now works at R.E.P.I didn't recognize her last name. Now is that ironic or what?

shlbysvt 04-12-2007, 02:59 PM My rooms are booked in the Courtyard Marriott in Utica. Arriving 6/14/07 and departing 6/16/07. Let the fun and road trip begin!:) Thanks 07 for all your efforts as this would not have been possible without you.;) I will be trailering my baby in an enclosed trailer being pulled by nothing other than a Ford F-150. Looking forward to meeting all in Romeo.
07 SHELBY 04-12-2007, 03:42 PM Hey guys,I would like to have a few days to get things a little more organized.I might be able to get a mini tour at AAI.I also would like to have people over for a grilling session(as in food) at my house.Maybe stay a little closer to me and we could all go in a pack.Just a thought.
shlbysvt 04-12-2007, 03:53 PM 07 didn't mean to jump the gun. Just let us know and I will make plans accordingly. Room reservations can always be changed and could think of nothing more exciting than a caravan of Shelby's on their way to Romeo. The open invitation to your home is just the icing on the cake 07. You truly are a special person!;)

What?!?!?! You can't control the weather? I've lost all respect, 07. :D :D
OK, I've got a big decision to make. Do I fly out, or drive the Shelby?
1. It's 1,300 miles from Parker, CO to Detroit. :(
2. We'd be driving a Shelby :D
3. Lots of wear and tear on the Shelby :(
4. We'd be driving a Shelby :D
5. Nebraska and Iowa :(
6. Flying would require less vacation time :D
7. Flying would cost about $600 :(
8. I have 22 days of vacation left this year :D
9. Flying means no Shelby :(
So, what do y'all think? Drive or fly?

I'd really like you to bring the Shelby but you have my offer and it still stands. Most of my family lives in Wyoming and Nevada so I know about the drive through Iowa and Nebraska.Apple doesn't make a big enough I-pod for those 2 states. It's 28 hours to my moms house.

3. Lots of wear and tear on the Shelby :(
4. We'd be driving a Shelby :D
5. Nebraska and Iowa :(
6. Flying would require less vacation time :D
7. Flying would cost about $600 :(
8. I have 22 days of vacation left this year :D
9. Flying means no Shelby :(
So, what do y'all think? Drive or fly?
Prez,
You can fly in the Shelby, set the cruise at 140 mph. Turn on the Non Visible mode (option noseeu) . At that speed you should see about 13 mpg.you will use 100 gal approximate. Actual driving time should be 9.30 hrs. If you can get one of our air Force fuellers to assist in the trip it won't be bad!
Let us know if this is a option.

LOL!!! In flight refueling. That's what we are missing! Road trips would be much nicer if you didn't have to stop for gas. OK, who is going to be first to open a mobile gas station? :D

I am hoping to get an answer tomorrow from the plant manager about a mini tour at AAI before Romeo engine tour.I think it will happen. Then I will give out more info on the accomadations and so forth. For what it's worth I would like you guys to stay in Monroe,Mi. which is 15 minutes from my house and 15 minutes from AAI then we will all go in a pack to Romeo.Mustangnut has offered to bring some high octane brews from the great white north(CANADA).Cheers, cheers!I know people are wanting more info and I will offer it soon. The hardest part is the commitments from the plants which we have from Romeo, great!I am just about done with my honey do list. The carpet was tore out today and the new carpet is going in tomorrow morning and I will be done and then I can concentrate more on this trip.My wife should be in heaven and I can get back to finishing my Shelby.I am really looking forward to this trip and meeting everyone plus I have some trinkets for you guys.Hope to see you soon...................07......................... ...........

Arbour88 04-17-2007, 11:42 AM 07 Shelby,
That's probably a generous guess.
My guess would put the average at closer to 4x.
Again, just my guess.
fee5707 04-17-2007, 11:48 AM you'll have a 21 year old bringing down the average...

Arbour88 04-17-2007, 08:07 PM Since we are sharing...45 and will be 46 in 2008 when I get my car. :)
Maybe one of our web wizards can set up a poll/survey that can figure out the average age of the members on this forum (without revealing 'who' for confidentiality reasons).
So far, we have members identified in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and I think one member a while back mentioned that he was in his 60s. :)
It's interesting to see the different information being shared by this diverse group.
Anyways, just a thought.

07 SHELBY 04-18-2007, 06:52 AM 07 will the tour be on the same day, the 15th, or another day?
The AAI tour will be the same day in the am before the Romeo tour. This is strictly optional as I want to give people the oppurtunity to see how the Shelbys are built and try and make the most out of their trip.I will set it up something like 7:00am to 9:00am for the tour at AAI and then drive to Romeo Engine and then tour there from 11:00am till around 2:00pm or 3 :00 pm on Friday the 15th of June then we will go back to my house for dinner and swimming, martinis, beer and lots of talking. All suggestions are welcome and open for discussion. The motels are 15 minutes to the north of me and 15 minutes to the south of AAI.It should be a good time for all.
Just remember I am up this early every day and I just threw in the AAI tour.If you wish not to attend the AAI tour thats ok we will meet at the plant at 9:00am and drive to Romeo from there.

I've just about talked my wife into driving out rather than flying. It'll add another 4-5 days to the trip, but I think we'd be kicking ourselves if we didn't have the Shelby there.
We're also thinking of getting there a day early to catch a Tigers game. We have this thing about wanting to see a game in every ballpark, and I'm not sure when we'll ever get back to Detroit.

Arbour88 04-18-2007, 09:52 AM rpretzel,
I do a similar thing except with NFL stadiums. I will see a game at every stadium and will cap it off by going to the pro bowl in Hawaii.
I go to a different city every year. I started this in 1990 with 3 other guys (we've since went our own ways, but I kept the tradition going) and so far I've been to (in order of visits):
Buffalo, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnatti, Seattle, San Fancisco, Miami, San Diego, Tampa Bay, Chicago, New Orleans, Minneapolis, Arizona, Kansas City, Oakland, Jacksonville and Dallas. I'm now more than half way done.
This year, I'm going to either Denver or Carolina. Not sure when yet. It all depends on whether or not my wife likes the shopping malls in the area. Our deal is that she goes shopping and I go to the game. It's great!
Take care.
shlbysvt, thanks for the offer, but I will not be travelling east in the next 3 or 4 months else, I would take you up on ther offer. :)

I was going to do this but I started getting bombarded with PM's so I started leaking info.I just called Best Western 1-734-289-2330 and they have rooms still available but Michigan Int'l Speedway is that weekend and there will be no group rate.If you are serious about comming please make arrangements ASAP.It won't effect our traffic because they will all be heading west and we will be heading north. Here are other motels at the same exit,Hometown Inn 1-734-289-1080,Knights Inn 1-734-243-0597.All are located at I-75 exit 15.If you need further assistance let me know,I'll see what I can do.Please PM me after you have booked so I can keep a head count.

No,I don't have a final # yet.I really need a PM from people once they have made reservations.Thanks.Mustangnut I will let you know but don't worry about how much to bring, bring what feels comfortable to you and I will help finance your decision.
Arbour88 04-18-2007, 10:59 AM rpretzel,
If we decide on Denver (I'll nudge my wife towards Denver's beautiful downtown shopping experience), I'll definetely give you a head's up first and we can make arrangements to meet somewhere and talk shop.
I'm sure you'll have your Shelby by then...oops! did I just say that? Just Kiddin'. Of course by then, you'll have many miles on it and will be seasoned pro.
Take care.

rpretzel 04-19-2007, 08:04 AM OK, so after a long discussion with my wife, we have decided to fly out rather than drive. We ran into vacation time issues since our summer is going to be so action-packed. Driving would add another 4-5 days on the trip, and my wife needs to save some time off for her sister's wedding in July. I'm very sad that we won't have the Shelby with us, but the wife is the boss of the family. We'll just have to live vicariously through everyone else.
We're flying into Detroit Metro on June 13th at 4:00 pm (woo hoo...just in time for rush hour), and then we are going to the Tigers game on the 14th.
And what's up with the ADM on the hotel rooms?!?!?
Can't wait to meet y'all! :D

Small world isn't it.I am the 1st generation to be born in Michigan. Most of my family is originally from Indiana.I'll never forget when I was in Florida a couple of years ago.I was taking care of my grandma and it came to a point where I had to put her in hospice.I was in the hospital and the nurse came by and my grandma grabbed my arm and said "you can trust him he's a Hoosier".It really made me laugh and I needed it.

07 SHELBY 04-19-2007, 11:43 AM I talked to some of the Mustang engineers today.I have commitments from the project Managers to meet and answer questions you might have. These guys are real car guys and love this stuff.I will talk to the Shelby project manager and I am sure he will meet also if he is here that day. These guys are all down to earth car guys and most will be at the house for dinner also. You will probably meet the President of AAI(no offense Prez) also.We will have a photo op with the plant in the background.I think this will be a memorable occasion for all of us.

07 SHELBY 04-22-2007, 03:55 PM I did a dry run today from AAI to Romeo engine plant. It was 61 miles and 71 minutes.I hit Tigers baseball traffic going out there so it was probably 10 to 15 minutes longer than it should have been.

Nice 07. Originally I thought the estimate was almost two hours. Gives us plenty of time for the AAI tour, 11am Romeo and a nice cruise.;)
07 SHELBY 04-22-2007, 04:29 PM I had never been to that plant before and I gave a little extra time in case of traffic, accident(God forbid) or construction.
07 SHELBY 04-23-2007, 07:12 AM 07, was on the phone with Fred from Evolution Performance and am trying to get him with his Shelby to join us at Romeo. Give him a call as you may be able to persuade him to make the trip, if it is not a race weekend.

I talked to Fred at Evolution. He is going to check his schedule and call me back.He might be able to make it.

Harley99fb,
Good work.Bobo has a Red with White strips Shelby.
This thing is turning into quite an affair at AAI.A lot of people are getting involved.Just so you know, when we get there(AAI)the 1st thing we have to do is watch a 5 minute safety video. This is MANDATORY.Then we will head out into the plant in groups of 10 with tour guides. This is great,I can just be part of the tour.
I forgot,TX COBRA won't be bringing his Shelby. He is flying in from Texas.
Rpretzel (Prez) is flying in from Colorado.
My1stShelby is flying in from California. Also he is healing well from that terrible accident he had, remember?
rpretzel 04-24-2007, 11:46 AM Unfortunately, mine will not be there. :( We've decided to fly out. I'll try to bring a picture, so she can be there in spirit. :D Too bad there's not another blue/tungsten on the list.

It looks as if it will be an all Coupe affair(EDIT - Orf has an alloy w/tungsten stripes vert). Thats ok, I wanted to bring the fastest color anyways.:D
Yes Prez, please bring photos. A nice smokey burnout would be nice.
I was wondering about My1stShelby. California would be a very long drive so soon after his accident. I hope he is doing well and strapped back in the Shelby soon.

Harley99fb,
.Just so you know, when we get there(AAI)the 1st thing we have to do is watch a 5 minute safety video. This is MANDATORY.
I'm sure this will be very informative, not just something to keep the insurance carriers happy.
Just playing around. I understand how things work.
Back in 2000 I went on a tour of MTP with a group of Expedition owners. We saw that video then, too. The tour was great, especially for someone, like me, who had never seen an automobile assembly plant in person. Of course, I'm a mechanical engineer and therefore am easily amused by watching machinery in operation.
Yeah, my wife says I'm a geek.
Orf,
She's a thing of beauty!
:)
Thanks. Her shoes are a little worn, though. 6000 miles, and a few too many smoke producing starts. Might need to re-skin before the gathering.

07 SHELBY 04-26-2007, 03:01 PM Well I can honestly say I have everything done that I can do for this trip.Once everyone sends me their info I will e-mail maps and directions out.The management, engineers and vendors have been great. The people that are comming are going to have a great time,I guarantee it.The biggest hurdle(for me) that I can see is that you will have tons of questions after the tours and when you get home and really think about it.If you need to know anything before you come, now is a good time.

07 Shelby - A couple of questions.
Are you throwing a get together at your place on Thursday night as well?
I'll be arriving in the Detroit area sometime early Thursday afternoon. After ag 700 miles on the car I'm sure the car won't be in pristine condition. Can you recommend a place either near your place or the hotel where I can get the car detailed/washed? It would be nice to have the car look sharp for the tour. :) Thanks.

It would be hard to deal with a full lot and trying to load / unload in a full lot.

07 SHELBY 06-12-2007, 09:25 AM I got a couple of phone calls from Romeo Engine Plant this morning.Everything is good to go there and at AAI.I was given 1 bit of advice. For those of you that are going they told me that 1 thing that people like to do is take a picture of their engine tag(with the mechanics signature) and print it out on 11"x17" photo paper.Bring it to the tour and the mechanics will sign it for you.Too bad both my mechanics have retired:( :(

Arbour88 06-12-2007, 04:04 PM Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm back from performing strike duty while our maintenance of way employees (Canadian Pacific Railway) went out on strike a month ago (May 14th). I was deployed to a location 1,000 KMs (600 miles) east from my home (Virden, Manitoba - I now know where the 'middle of nowhere' is), so that sucked. It's interesting work and I can honestly say that it's not that bad or that hard to do.
Everytime I drove a spike into a railroad tie, the song "I'm Working On A Railroad" kept my mind entertained. We had a great crew of 4 and had many laughs.
Anyways, I hope you all have a great time this coming weekend and may you all enjoy a fantastic, sunny and warm visit at both the plant and at 07 SHELBY's home.
Take care all.
:)

X STI C 06-15-2007, 10:16 PM Thanks to 07 for this great opportunity. The plant tours were really fun and all the forum members I had the chance to meet were really chill.
Anyone up for a trip to Japan to see the Subaru Tecnica International (STi) Headquarters?...
VNMOUS1 06-15-2007, 10:26 PM What a great "family outing"! Both AAI and Romeo were interesting and it was very cool to have such an opportunity for a behind the scenes look at our car's processes in life.
It was truly a pleasure to meet such a great group of people.
07, Tiffany and I thank you for this perhaps once in a lifetime event. Also, thanks to you and your family for hosting us.
Again, you're the best!

We had a wonderful time and meeting all the members who were able to be present made for a memorable event. Thanks once again, Joe, Anthony and Chris.
fee5707 06-16-2007, 07:50 PM Agreed!
Thank you sooooooo much 07. You mentioned it would probably be the last time I ever saw ya. I'd like to hope it is not. It was great to meet everyone, and I'd like to appologize for not being very outgoing, I'm kind of a shy one!
The tours were great, meeting Paul and Tim (engine builders) was definitely my highlight!
Hope everyone made it home safe and sound!

SN8KBYT 06-16-2007, 07:55 PM Thank you 07 SHELBY for your work in putting on the tour and opening your house to us. Gavin and I had a wonderful time and was able to make great memories of the Ford plant and meeting all of you guys. Wish we were closer to all of you, it was great sharing the same passion for our cars.
oldimp 06-16-2007, 08:38 PM Pulled into the yard about 20 minutes ago! We have a very nice insect collection on the Shelby tonight! Not as extensive as Joe's was, but still impressive!
Excellent! Thanks for everything, 07 SHELBY and family! We had a terrific time! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
