Earthquake rocks Washington area
From Associated Press
August 23, 2011 2:05 PM EDT
WASHINGTON (AP) — A 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., shook much of Washington, D.C., and was felt as far north as Rhode Island and New York City.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was 3.7 miles deep. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. The quake was in Mineral, Va., in Louisa County.

Dude, I was working on my car- went into the basement getting some split wire loom and the whole house started shaking. I ran and opened the door- the dog beat me out of the house. The whole driveway shook for almost a minute! Everything is good though.

I was at work when it happened. It was interesting to say the least. My entire facility had to be evacutated (military facility) while the people in charge found out what happened. It was a nice day to be outside for a while.

Moms in Lexington VA said it felt like a UPS truck backed into the house, got tangled up, and spent a minute rocking back and forth trying to get unstuck. My sister who was even closer in Richmond VA said all she could think about is that nuclear power plant 30 miles out of town failing and spewing radioactive waste all over VA. Here on Long Island we just got a little boogie, but it sure got my attention!

you east coasters.....us in socal were laughing at all of you running around, like scared little mice...

a 5.9 in socal is as common as morning coffee....

Get back to us when you have an 8.0 and the ground doesn't stop moving for 2 minutes, and the sky turns turquoise from the blown transformers.

Little shake and thankfully no damage...keep in mind we're not set up to deal with earthquakes the way California is, an 8.0 would be a major disaster if that hit out here...honestly the thought is pretty scary.
DC metro area was a complete mess...

Maybe so, but us east coasters will have the last laugh when Commiefornina falls into the Pacific when the big one hits. :thefinger:

My dog woke me up last night and about a minute later we had another small quake...this one was only a few seconds and more of a rattle.

Of course, my friend who is a geologist is not answering his damn phone so I am trying to get insight on the events and what they mean in the short/long term. I expected him to be rather busy so hopefully, I can get some answers.

Because of what I do at work each time this happens I basically become the person in charge so it means no sleep...second night in a row where I've had a couple of hours of sleep...one more and I may type things like this afkl;j asfhj ioiou because of my face hitting the keyboard :-)

It shook pretty good where I live. SoCa can laugh all they want. I never experienced anything like that in my life. Sounded like the house was coming apart. Nothing funny about that. Gives perspective to all those folks who do lose their homes to natural disasters.

+1. NorCal gets quakes like this all the time. That is how we stir our instant coffee. (STKJock) As for falling into the ocean… give me a break.

The earth moved under my feet.......

Does this mean your not a virgin anymore? Still wasn't as bad as the sonic BOOM the next day FU%K that was loud, you were lucky if you missed it. Basically from Rocky point to Riverhead, an air force jet flying too low punched it. Actually shook the house worse than the earth quake.
