: $92 oil change and scratched car

so i needed an oil change. i used to do it my self but figure "hey i only save like 10-20 bucks i'll just take it to the dealer." usually this turns out fine. this time however i take it to a dealer here in libertyville, IL, where i happen to be stationed for the time being. everything was great till i got home after the oil change and noticed white scuffs on my shelby + scratches and swirl marks. i am completely anal when it comes to my car. i only hand wash or spray it off never using any other means. evidently at the dealership they only handwash mustangs. it looks like they wet it down and used an oily, grit filled rag on my car. i called the dealership they said bring it by for the manager to look at.

any thoughts as to how i should proceed?

it is a $52,xxx car. i paid less but it is still something i saved up for and sacrificed alot for. frankly i am fing pi$$ed.

I've heard stories about dealers who wash customer cars after an oil change as a gesture of "good" customer service. I never take my car to the dealer for fear of something getting dinged, scratched, or scuffed. I take mine to a Valvoline Express and before I let them change my oil the first time, I talked with the manager about how protective I am of my car. I also asked him to see the oil that would go in my car (Castrol 5w50) as peace of mind. I wasn't being a prick about it, just honest in a kind way about my concerns. He was a real nice guy (and a car guy) and said I could watch the entire process in the bay where customers are usually prohibited and I could drive it straight out when finished. The techs know me and my car well and go the extra mile to be careful. A real good crew at this shop and I never worry about the Shelby when they have the keys. And the oil change only costs $58.

If you can buff out the defects yourself, do it. Taking it back to the dealer may only make things worse. If they wash a car with such carelessness, how will they detail it? Bottomline, do not take any of their services as compensation. Get your money back and go elsewhere. I literally "interviewed" managers at different places until I found one I could trust.

I would take it to a detailer and get their opinion, get a quote and charge the dealer to get it rectified.

If I have to bring the car in for service, I always tell the service adviser not to wash it and have him/her write it down.

Apparently my Ford dealer doesn't go the extra mile because I just had my oil changed and they did not wash my car. However, I was really nervous about bringing it to them. I'm real particular and would flip if the scratch, scuff, or ding my car. I will be sure to note this for future visits.

Buy your own oil and filter online so you don't get screwed. The parts guy's are on commission.:zlurking:

They only way to fix this is to have a professional paint correction process done utilizing a "Cutting" process I used to be in that business years ago and still do it on the side there are tons of HOW TO's on Autopia or Autogeek on how the correctly remove scratches, rids, swirls, etc it's just time consuming and where the expense comes in. I could help located a pro in your area if needed, however DO NOT let them talk you into letting their paint/body shop fix it for you trust me on this to me this is damage inflicted on your car by a 3rd party no different than someone vadalizing your car so maybe insurance on their part will cover it.

Just an idea of the process

Gave it a good DAWN hand wash and P21S wheel gel bath and had to use the P21S total auto wash around the wheel wells and front end to remove alot of bug and tire mess.

Pulled it in to hand dry and air compressor dry
