Ford has transformed the Mustang from a muscle car into a true sports car, with a ride so dialed-in that even even the Germans want to take it for a spin. Not forgetting the car's roots, however, there's still the raw and mean Shelby GT500; a car that harkens back to the glory days of Detroit.

That is about to change in 2013, when Ford launches a very modern version of the GT500, tossing aside the big supercharger in favor of some very modern turbocharged technology. Ford will carry on using a V8, although the exact displacement of the powerplant is not known. Rumors of a 5.0-liter and a 5.8-liter have surfaced.

Power, as expected, will be tremendous. Move aside Camaro ZL1. Forget it Challenger SRT8. The 2013 Shelby GT500 will reportedly make an astonishing 650-hp.

I have a F250 with a turbo. As I’m on my third turbo, I wouldn’t touch another Ford turbo for the love of money. Besides turbochargers have a lag that the superchargers don’t when getting started. This is a real bad idea.

Yet if you see the video that Inside Line just post it still sounds like a supercharger. Still rumors till ford releases something.

It's been a long time but still I have not so pleasant memories of my '80 Capri. After the fourth turbo and six months in service I gave up.

Its hunger for oil consumption was an issue Ford could never figure. The '13 GT500 might not have a problem but then again...

1 Bullitt,

I just drove a F150. The owner told me it has twin turbos. The truck has a big time turbo lag. I would expect the same to be true with the proposed mustang. I think I’ll just keep what I have

I had plans to get the next generation GT500 but after reading the rumblings of a turbo GT500 and likely course Ford will take to revive the GT500 I decided to order a '12 GT500 instead before they are gone. It is my opinion the '13 GT500 might turn out to be a test mule for the next Mustang design.

Hopefully I will be proven wrong.

The prospect of enhanced performance is meaningless if it is compromised with issues. All the hoopla and cheerleading of a the latest and "the most powerful Mustang ever" tag can die real quick specially when one winds up paying mid to high 50s which I assume will be its price tag and not meet expectations.

I dont see anything wrong with a turbo mustang as long as its dont write if tuned correctly you can vritually negate all of the lad if twin turbo even easier. I guess some of you guys have just had bad expereince with turbos My first turbo vehicle I drove to 215, 000 miles wrx and my current comuter car is a turbo forester ( great for big dogs) and I hav about 150,000 on it and it has been rock solid its all in if it is engineer and built right. Wether its supercharged, turbocharged or even twin charged ( turbo and supercharger) I have faith that Ford will get it right so far they have been its even converted me a ford hater ( grew up hating ford long story ) to now want to buy my wife a ford and in a year or 2 get either a 5.0 or a gt500 of some sort lets give them a chance before we bash em.

Turbos don't whine!!!!

I would say they will keep the same 5.4 and just add the TVS. That alone would easily put the car in the 620-650bhp range. I would also agree with an earlier post that the fog light portion of the intercooler is more of a oil cooler. Just my .02

I would by any other Ford with the Eccoboost except the Mustang and especially the GT500. Part of my decision to buying the GT500 was the fact that it has a Supercharger from the Factory.

That certainly is not a turbo in the spy video. It is most definitely a supercharger. I can't see them going with a Turbo. It would take a lot of redesigning to swap to turbo. Where they could easily get 650hp from better cooling, and a more efficient supercharger.

Boomee,

Are you kidding me? You stated that using a twin turbo could virtually negate turbo lag. Well Ford does not have a good history nor do current products perform will regarding turbos and/or lag. I just drove a friend’s Ecoboost F150. From a stop light, you stomp on the gas and take a nap. You will wake up long before the engine does. On my F250, it was not bad nor was it great with a small lag. However, I didn’t buy it to zoom around town in which is the purpose of the GT500. I bought the truck to tow. After going through turbos, Ford has flashed the truck. The current flash has the engine so detuned that I would never have bought it if it ran this piss poor. Way back in the ‘80s, I got over 200,000 miles out of a turbo diesel Mitsubishi (like a Dodge D50) pickup. Even with this turbo, I had to use the manual transmission to keep the turbo spooled up to avoid lag.

Sure, I know the Porsche makes a sports car in turbo form. I have driven them. I now really like my Shelby even more. German engineering is a myth. Porsche has nothing over us except the price tag.

I think 1 Bullitt you are on track. I wouldn’t want a turbo either.

Like most things, I'll believe it when I see it.
If they are going to go more and more in a high performance direction there are many other things that could yield better results than simply more peak HP. Perhaps this will come with a large suite of other upgrades.. but who knows. Easy to sell HP I guess...gonna be pretty pricey though either way.

Nope Im not kidding you at all thats my opinion thats how it works in a forums some people tend to disagree. I have also had an expreience with the flex turbo 6 and it moves wonderfully. Regardless of your past with some turbo vehicles technology has made leaps and bounds and I am pretty confident that Ford could get it right.Other compannies have ( nissan Porsche, Subaru, GM) V6 turbo on a f150 could be a night and day from a TTV8shleby.The next BMW will likly have a turbo V8.Its just speculation but dont shoot it down just because you had a bad experience with trucks because like you said they have diffrent purposes. Just saying ,either way looks like we may have to wait till 2015 to see if ford has the balls to build them. Even Carrol Shelby himself has said in one are 2 articles that turbos are definitly in the plans some way for the future.
