Since I am a 49er fan, I may be a bit biased, but I think Bill Walsh completely revolutionized the game of football. He created an offense that like nothing else. Up to that point, short yardage meant run and long yardage meant deep pass. Bill came in with a play book of passes designed to make 5 to ten yards...the quick slant, the flare pass, etc. It was a very quick and disciplined, 5-yards-at-a-time offense that just wore down the defense. He was also the first to build a team around quickness rather than size. During the Walsh era, the 49ers did not have an offensive lineman over 280 lbs. The offense was designed to go around the big, slow players on the defense rather than through them. Genius.
Of course, it didn't hurt to have Joe Montana out there leading the way. I have an ink drawing of Joe Montana hanging in my living room. It's a little tacky, but the guy was the greatest QB ever. :D

rpretzel,
I too, am a 49er fan and have been since the late 70s (I know, I know, but what can I say I like the fact that they continued to try and try and never gave up).
A great loss indeed. A true innovator for the game of football.
We all mourn his passing. :(
