5.4 L GT500 Crate Engine What automatic transmission will stand up to this engine

I have purchased a 5.4 L GT500 Crate Engine for my streetrod application. What automatic will stand up to the torque this engine puts out? Looking to cruise versus shift??????????? Fortyrag, yep it's a Forty Ford Convertible.

I think some people have used a built Turbo 400 behind 'em, and some have used a Powerglide. I think the GT500 5.4s would be great with a beefy auto behind 'em. Lots of torque.

A properly built 4R75W can live behind the GT500. Darrin Birch with BC Automotive is a person that can build that transmission for you.

Definitely get an overdrive- TH400's are the stone age. And have one built. I had a built tranny in my F250 7.3 turbo diesel and it handled 600+ ft/lbs no problem.

Can't help which model fits the mod motors though... I'm too new to them.

Give me a good automatic tranny with a transbake ANYDAY. At the track the cars would work SO much better with the proper torque converter/tranny setup. For the street the 6 speed is fun, but the auto would be faster.

2015 Mustang GT 5.0/A6 ...... Stock for now.

Previous ride- 2007 GT500, just the average 800whp VMP TVS combo

Re: 5.4 L GT500 Crate Engine What automatic transmission will stand up to this engine

Guys, I definately want an overdrive, it's a 40 Ford Convertible and not a drag car. I do have the 4 bar setup and a posi 9" Ford rear end. I am shifting my 66 big block vette and my Harley and I'm looking to cruise with this one until I get the urge to punch it. Anyone heard good things about TCI? What about a built AOE? Late 50's and been there done that and tired!

Re: 5.4 L GT500 Crate Engine What automatic transmission will stand up to this engine

The 4R70W and 4R75W are modern versions of the AOD-E and should mate to the back of the 5.4. The latter is the truck version found behind 5.4s. I'm not sure it would matter which you choose, if it's built. The problem will be finding a PCM that can control it and the engine.
