Hello all, What size exhaust does this motor NEED? I know it comes mostly with 2.75 inch exhaust but the only upgrade that I've seen is 3 inch which is also application for the 5.0 Coyote.
Upon A LOT of digging, there are kits that go to 3 inch. But most of them retain the 2.75 inch stock transition size I guess for interchangeability.
Also, it seems without upgrading to a Whipple or 800, 900, or 1000 horsepower the factory exhaust may be sized ok.
The engine doesn't really "need" anything larger than stock but larger does help it breath better and make more power. It is also worth noting that while 2.75" to 3" doesn't seem like much, it is actually a 20% increase in flow area! (good ole Pi*R^2).
Well by need I mean to operate at 100% efficiency. There's good enough and then there's optimal. If a 3" over the axle section plus some higher flowing mufflers in the back help it make more optimal efficiency then I'm all for it. Then there's the "is it worth it?" question and that I don't know.
Thanks for responding. I posted this question on another site a week ago and never got a response. No offense to the other site.
Thank you, that's another excellent response. I can piece together some over the axle tails and an axle back muffler of some sort (leaning toward Dynomax UltraFlow welded). I won't be out much money but was just hoping it would see gains, kind of the horsepower per dollar effect.
If you are looking horsepower per dollar, exhausts are marginal at best - they are more for sound - especially axle back systems.
For an 11/12 GT500 I would recommend a larger CAI and/or a pulley swap as your best "bang for buck" for power. Both would be the same price or cheaper than an axle back exhaust but would give much bigger gains - especially the pulley swap. (Note: both of the above would require a tune).
I just did the pulley swap on my using the VMP 2.5" kit ($330ish) with a BAMA tune from AM and the difference was substantial!
^^Yes, sotek hit the nail on the head. Performance dollars are better spent in front of the combustion chamber. Pullies/intake/supercharger swap/tune/injectors/etc.
Exhaust is mainly for sound. Headers will lower back pressure and subsequently boost, but for the cost/effort, it's usually not worth it unless you are going for BIG power.
Slap a set of Borla-S on your car for awesome sound and then spend money elsewhere.
After a lot of research to see what I could come up with, I thought about trying something different. Blackcad55 actually sparked some of the thought process on this. I also posted this in his thread.
I thought about getting a 3 inch catback along with some muffler deletes. But welding in 2 sets of Dynomax bullets into the 3 inch mid pipes, mounting them as far forward as I could. Mounting the mufflers as far forward SHOULD make the tone sound "older" since more older musclecars had their mufflers mounted under the body with more tailpipe.
The only catch is I'll have to wait until I have some money to play!
